Pommel Strike (upgraded)

Damage: 300%

Stun: 4s

Stamina cost: 35

Cooldown: 16s

Grappling Chain (upgraded)

Damage: 300%

Stun: 3s

Stamina cost: 20

Cooldown: 12s

Is there any compelling reason why I should take Pommel Strike, considering that Grappling Chain's stun duration is only one second shorter, is cheaper to cast, has a shorter cooldown and on top of this is a ranged attack?

Does grappling chain stun or just knockdown?  The former primes combos, the latter does not.

My first thought was, oh so that's how they balanced it.

Grappling chain does seem better in most cases, but there is no reason that getting one excludes the other. How about 7 seconds of stun and 600% damage for 55 Stamina?

Because of cooldowns - you cant stunlock with only 1 stun ability.  Pull them in with Grapple.  Smack them about a few times with normal attacks while they're stunned.  Pommel Strike to keep them stunned.  Smack them a few more times.  Bull Rush them (activate then immediately cancel it) to knock them down.  Hit them some more etc.

I appreciate that you can combine both Chain and Pommel Strike for extra stun-goodness, but unfortunately there's also only a limited number of active ability slots in the game.

My current build looks like this:

- Charge

- Block and Slash

- Mighty Blow

- Grapple Chain

- Taunt

- Roll

- Reaver Focus ability

- [Pommel Strike/Whirlwind/Earthshatter strike/Ring of Pain] - my current dilemma!

As far I'm concerned the first five abilities on the list are required. I could probably do without Roll and instead rely on Block, but there are enemies who make AOE attacks you cannot block at all.

pommel strike will probally do more damage since it only gets it's damage reduced by armor once. while chain will get reduced by armor twice.

If this were a discussion about the value of the upgrade point and you have room for both skills. I would certainly upgrade grapple first to add another stun to your skill set.

However since you have are running out of space for skills... I'd just upgrade grapple hook and get another core damage ability.

Your build looks ideal for whirlwind, and I would suggest getting whirlwind if you intend on controlling this warrior, It's rather impressive if you are willing to invest the points to upgrade it. My first war was a whirlwind reaver build. Spin to wind as it were, heh.

Pommel strike upggade - nice to have, but ultimately doesn't add anything.

Grappling Chain upgrade - gives you knocknack and another CC. Not to mention GC --> Mighty blow is a devestating combo!

I like Pommel strike though. Hits hard, instant hit and a stun. Lower CD on it? Perfect!
