Should I clear an area (Hinterlands, etc.) ASAP, or can it wait til a certain point?

The answer is that it's basically impossible to "clear an area" in one fell swoop. There are challenges in the Hinterlands that are just beyond your ability to handle; you will need to come back later with a higher-level party.

Coming back with new party members will also allow you to hear new dialogue, and going back to Haven means you can launch some operations, which take RL time to complete.

The areas are designed in a manner that almost demands that you come back and tackle certain places when you have a stronger, wiser character on your hands.  While there are still plenty of side quests and areas that you can take care of with little concern, there are also areas specifically designed to ensure you cannot just run in with  your sword swinging in the air and expect to come out alive - at least, for the time being.

Personally, I love this aspect of the design.  There have been more then a few times I have wandered into an area just to learn that I was WELL under-prepared for the situation I found myself in.  I don't expect to "clear" Hinterlands myself for quite some time, and I rather like the fact that the area will remain relevant for a while as I push through the rest of the story/side missions elsewhere.

Gotcha, thanks. I was mainly worried that if I didn't do something right away I'd miss out on it. Appreciate the responses.

Yeah, I REALLY wanted to clear out the Hinterlands before moving on. My plan was to do everything there before moving on. But you just cant. Some of the stuff is just too high in level.

Personally, I love this change so far, its just different and that's awesome.

You can't I don't think. I'm 90 percent done with everything in the hinterlands. Everything is done except a few mosaic pieces, the dragon and one side quest where you need a rare plant material not found in the hinterlands. I'd imagine other areas won't require foreign materials like that and they can be 100 percented.

You can get really close though lol

Ahahah I was the same. I said to myself "okay I am gonna do ALL the side quests before I tackle the story". 5 hours in and still have soooo many side quests, I quickly realized that wasn't gonna happen.
