Yeah.....I am so glad I did not jump into the pre-ordering hype bandwagon like so many people here did, knowing full well what Bioware has become as a developer under the control of EA. I too share the view that Dragon Age Origins was perhaps the greatest story-driven RPG of the last decade. Despite the somewhat dated graphics, the game had a living, beating heart at its core; the main story, though in many ways a fusion of most well known high/dark fantasy themes, managed to be original and profound enough to inspire even the most jaded of gamers into falling for it like love at first sight.  The heroes and villains alike were given serious multi-faceted development so that we were able to peer into their virtues, their flaws and how their personal stories were meant to become part of this epic saga. Duncan, Alistair, Morrigan, Leliana, Flemeth, Arl Eamon, Loghain, Ohgren, Sten, Zevran, the various Wardens, the Couslands, etc....they all have left an indelible mark in our minds and hearts. Furthermore, the combat system was pure tactical genius. The individual commands option made the game a delight to play. Your party was yours to control in whatever style you chose. You could make it as simple or as complex as you wanted.  It took advantage of the M+KB configuration in the best possible way. It all came together, storytelling, lore and gameplay, to make DAO a timeless, true classic.

This time around though, no doubt once again compelled by its corporate master, Bioware tried hard to appeal to fans of all RPG-ish sub-genres, from MMOS to action RPGs to classic, tactical RPGs, only to end up delivering a game that is as bland and frustrating as it is glitchy. The story may be the game's only saving grace, since pretty graphics, ultimately, cannot compensate for the broken gameplay that (mostly) PC gamers are having to deal with, even after months of dev PR assuring anxious fans that the PC was the "leading" development platform for the game. Now we know this was a blatant lie and, unfortunately, PC gamers took the bait hook, line and sinker.

I am so glad I did not pre-order this game. I will wait and if/when Bioware releases significant patches that correct all major issues in this game, then I will consider spending my hard earned money to buy it. As it now stands, this is not worth any PC gamer's hard earned money. I would seriously encourage all PC gamers who feel betrayed or cheated by this unfortunate situation to speak with their wallets, since it seems the language of money is the only language corporations like EA understand. To do that, we have to do something very simple: abstain from pre-ordering any more games. Period. This is the only way these people will learn to respect their consumer base. Wait until so-called "AAA" games come out and are reviewed by fans. Only then can we, as consumers, have enough information that would justify the purchase of such games or not.

It really is sad to see a once cutting edge studio like Bioware dumb down and bastardize one of their most celebrated IPs in such a shameless way.

I wish I could but alas the retailer I purchased it from offers no refunds for PC games. I'm stuck in this mess now and will just have to cling on to the blind hope that this will somehow get fixed someday.

I honestly feel duped by the developers and various "reviews" I've watched/read prior to my purchasing this game. ALL of them conveniently failed to mention that the game controls like a steaming turd on PC.

Not even remotely dissatisfied with the game.

Quite the opposite actually. 10/10 here with only a single bug in over 20 hours of play (PS4)

I feel sorry for those who were disappointed or had/having issues. I hope you can find what you are looking for and for those having issues I hope they are resolved soon so you can enjoy the game as well!

It could also be due to the fact that the VAST majority of the reviews were written based of the console versions and not the PC.

The console versions are running FAR smoother.

I have had absolutely no problems playing this game on my PC. None. It is rock solid, and smooth as butter even on Ultra. I have a i860 and a Nvidia 970. I would have thought that anyone could get this to run on their hardware by reducing the graphics levels, and the game would still look amazing.

Seriously, this is an amazing effort by Bioware, it's one of the most beautiful games of its type that I've played.

Well that is great for you.

However that is an extremely rare occurrence for the PC version at the moment.

I wholeheartedly agree that the game is amazing but I can hardly blame PC users for being upset and trashing the game. They can't exactly praise it, because at the moment they can't exactly play it.

People who bought it directly off Origin can refund the game without hazzle via GGG within 24 hours, or potentionally even later (though obviously the longer you wait, the smaller your chances for a successful refund request go).

People who bought it for PC from a retailer are mostly out of luck though.

i like the game so im not returning it to the store :P

Sadly I can't get a refund. I can only hope they fix it although I'm not very optimistic about that.

No, because I have chosen to wait a couple of weeks after release, and then I'll decide if I want to buy it.

The first advantage of doing so has already presented itself - after hearing about PC technical issues, and lower quality graphics on 360/PS 3, I've decided that I'll get it for PS 4 (if I decide to buy it.)

PS4 is the way to go for this game.

If the console versions are running that much smoother, the PC version would have to be outright unplayable.  PS4 users seem to be having the best experience.

As a PS4 player myself I can confirm. In 20 hours played I have encounter a single issue which was fixed with a restart.

Yes got refund after playing for an hour. Just hate the controls on the pc and all the other bad programming decisions showing that the pc game is mainly a console port. Which is fine but not for £50. Shame, absolutely loved dragon age 1 and 2. That tactical camera lol

IT isn't up to them. The game runs alright for some people, it's suspected it might be the DRM because lords of the fallen had the same problems. Unstable for like 40% of the people who bought it. So it works fine for you, but try and understand how frustrating it is for that 40% that paid for it and is unable to play it despite having the hardware to do so.

That being said, origin gives you a 24 hour great game or w/e to return the game, it's what I did. Just return the game, get your money back, and when they fix the bugs re-purchase the title. That way as long as they fix the problems, they still make the sale money, and you don't risk losing money if they don't fix it. Thing is you have to do it within 24 hours so people can't just wait for it to get fixed.

It's not so much a problem of Bioware but of the Frostbite engine (at last on the legit ones, more on this later). Look at Battlefield 4 problems and you will see that they are the exact same ones people are encountering in DA:I just now.

Blaming Bioware for everything without having done even a little of research on the matter seems to be the trend nowadays, sadly. I understand the frustration of people who bought the game and cannot run it fine (that however I could bet my two hands on it at last in 40% of the cases the problems are caused by the same users; let's face it: not many people around seem to care very much about their system nor how to optimize it properly, this is a well known fact) but before complaining you should at last try to understand what the problem is so you have a better chance to resolve the issue.

The Direct X error HUNG_DEVICE you see around, for example, is caused much probably by the TDR delay and there are a lot of reasons why it can happen, of which only few have really to do with the engine itself (there are a lot of articles on how to resolve the issue on the net; I had the error too some time ago and it was for a faulty PSU, nothing to do with a game). But people naturally don't care to research and immediately blame Bioware for it. A PC is not a console, you must take care of it and know how to optimize it properly elsewhere in time you will surely encounter some problem that then you will blame on a game company for (unjustly). But naturally if it happens for example with CDProjekt then people are all accommodating, if it happens with Bioware the crusade begins... (case in point the control scheme: it resembles a game called "The Wticher 2" and yet there nobody seems to complain so much, and still The Wticher 1 was completely point and click as DA:O).

No seriously, stop defending this game, at least on PC.  You like it, fine.  Negativity is depressing, fine. But, please, stop.

I have had no major tech problems but every other part of my gaming experience felt like a sad joke.  Tried to love the game for 12 hours.  It's not playable with a mouse/keyboard. PeriodWhich would have been fine if the consumers haven't been told the exact inverse thing. I mean there is a lot of fine-looking games I don't buy because it's obvious that they have been especially designed for a controller, most recent example of this being Shadow of Mordor. Fine, I won't buy them because I don't like playing with a controller. Just don't communicate to the contrary.

Timing your counters and attacks is crucial to having a modicum of fun battling the generically-designed-plot-unrelated-endlessly-re-spawning-dumb-as-hell mobs in DAI. And it's not just not effing possible with the current interface.

Looting and crafting?  Crafting is such an essential part of the game that they had to make it like teen seconds for looting every piece of crap, right? Time-sink, pure and simple.  And talk about immersion : I got the promotional item flames- something bettered by the first crafted weapon, before I even had a chance to test it.

Quests. Haven't seem then yet. Fedex and kill x tasks are not deserving of the name in a single-player game.

Art direction is very, very peculiar and controversial by nature.  Green and green everywhere.  Yes, we get it it's the new brand-color in this game. Does this mean that everything has to look the same in the whole Hinterlands?

Everybody (and your avatar is forced to look like that) is dressed as a hipster with funny looking slim-pants and mustaches. And everybody loves hipsters, right? Who, as popular wisdom have it, were prominent in medieval-ages. I mean, how hard could it be to produce elastane with rudimentary knowledge of chemistry, and weave it into the epitome of practicality that is the default outfit with a mechanical loom, right? Human male are about as big as your average fashion journalist and males elves look right on the verge of malnutrition. Quite funny if it wasn't so pathetic. Details do matter in a work of fiction. It's called creating an atmosphere.

I could rant and rant like so many others on the defaults of this game, but it's pointless.  Miscommunication and misleading statements on the part of EAware regarding this game and especially the PC gaming experience is verging on a commercial scam in my -not so profane- opinion.

Happy gaming to everyone who likes the game. Happy refunding for the others. EA people are nice, they seem to have had a lot of practice lately.

I do what I want.

I defend the game not because it has not problems (that are well known) but because the amount of hate is disproportioned to those problems. Case in point your "It's not playable with a mouse/keyboard. Period. " that's complete and utter crap. You can play the game with M/K fine and I'm doing it in fact. There are some issues that greatly detracts from the experience (that would be very good without those issues) but it is perfectly playable even now. The Witcher 2 at beginning in comparison had 10 times more problems (and it still has many) on the controls and yet there wasn't even 1% of the rage there is here. People simply made CDProjekt aware of the them and waited a little for patches while continuing to play and enjoy the other aspects that worked well. Bugs? Bethesda games and even the same TW2 were plagued by them (much more than DA:I is, and the majority of those problems are not even a direct fault of Bioware but of the Frostbite engine - see BF4 technical threads for a proof of this) and yet I've seen nobody there screaming "refund" every thread.

In these forums it is all hyperbole and whining: ranging from people that cannot accept DA:I to be anything less than a "DA:O 2014" to people that scream for "global refund campaigns" every two threads. It is hilarious and pathetic to watch at the same time.

I can guarantee you, if instead of EA it was "new kickstarter startup yo dawg" distributing this, there wouldn't be. Ever since EA acquired BW, the venom directed at them is awful and unjustified. Like EA is actually telling their best studio and prominent cash cow how to create their games. People have no idea how an acquisition or merger functions in real life.

What's all this comment comparing the controls of DA:I with TW2? In TW2 you control one guy, in DAI you control a party of characters. That's the main gripe about the PC controls. People bought this game expecting the same tactical capabilities as DA:O and DA2. Bioware's twitch streams used the tactical view as a selling point. The way they showed it, it seemed that you can control the characters on tactical view like how you do it in DA:O.  When I was watching the stream I was almost tempted to pre-order it, Good thing I didn't.

I am really curious as to why you want a refund.  Of all the games in the last several months, this game is nothing in terms of bugs, glitches, or issues compared to most others.  I think the releases of the last major Ubisoft games in the last 6 months, as well as LBP and Drive Club should make you reconsider your position.  Hell, even go back as far as Battlefield 4.  DA Inquisition is fantastic and has very few bugs, nothing gamebreaking.

Nope... preorder a game, expect bugs. it's the norm nowadays, especially for a game with this size and scope being developed for 4 platforms. just wait for patches... or don't preorder stuff anymore.

The developers already said they're listening, and working on releasing a patch. What are you actually voting with your wallet again if they're working on fixing the bugs now? Big games like Skyrim or DAI have a lot of glitches due to the vastness of the world. I personally don't have any problem with the game asides from some counterintuitive gameplay on PC.

im sorry but....

no auto-attack is not a bug....

no RMB click to loot is not a bug...

no RMB click to follow/attack is not a bug...

no companion combat tactics(like DAO) is NOT a bug...

using a Witcher 2 sonar like to search loot is not a bug....in witcher 2 it actually makes sense...it comes from his necklace! as of here what it is? a yellow submarine?

its down right disrespectful...

and i really REALLY hope that the idea of you giving orders in tac-mode and being disregarded by your companions when you leave tac-mode is a BUG....please let it be a BUG....

Nope, I'm working around the terrible controls and design decisions by remapping default keys, assigning functions to my mouse and ignoring Tactical Mode for now. Hopefully they fix things, but i can live with how it is for now, even though it would definitely be a better game if a lot of the suggestions floating around were implemented.
