"Dark" Leliana is edge-material.

This is the second time Bioware's writers fall under the Character Derailment trope at least of Main characters. First Liara became dark and depressing in Mass Effect and now out of seemingly nowhere Leliana is much darker than she used to be. She emotes with anger and cynicism and worst of all I feel like most of her new "traits" are shown just with her clothing and her dark and edgy hood.

What was so wrong with her before? Why is Leliana suddenly edgy and dark? The change feels so cheap even if I'll get it explained for me eventually.

Seems pretty clear to me that Bioware's intention here is "ooh, when fans see Leliana they're gonna be like "Wow, what happened to Leliana, why is she so dark, how intriguing"" but to me it feels forced.

To be honest, I don't like it either.  I found her innocence and bright faith endearing.  And before someone says she's having a crisis of faith at the Divine being killed... NO!  She went dark before that.

Suddenly?

I think given what we know of the prior 10 years, a little darkness and edge is understandable.  Plus, think about the event that starts the game.

So, yeah, I think it would be surprising if she weren't a bit on edge....

I don't mind her being dark, but she's downright unpleasant to talk with. I avoid her unless I need to in the War Council because she leaps down my throat every time I say anything. I get what they were trying to do but she's one of the very few major characters who I don't find engaging in any way (which is sad, because I liked her a lot in every previous game).

Look on the bright side, OP, at least it was 10 years for Leilana. She's not a 100 year old asari who changed completely in 2 years like Liara.

I...don't honestly care.

Before release I thought I wouldn't like it but now that I've spoken to her I don't see why I though I cared in the first place. "Dark" Leliana is just fine to me, regardless of justification for her personality.

She doesn't seem that dark to me in fact she still talks an jokes about things like in origin. Maybe its the dialogue you've been choosing? maybe you pissed her off.

Well my warden romance her and Morrigan, but chose Morrigan over her. For my story line she is just bitter after being rejects 10 yrs ago with common spy reports about my warden, Morrigan and their child as a happy family.
