i need help. my tank keeps dying to fast wondering if anyone here has any tips, tricks or advice for me. I dont want to change the difficulty setting to hard since i would feel like im cheating myself.

But my Tank is getting killed faster then she should be vs 2+ mobs.

Im using a mage/rogue/2hd warrior set up, using crowd control as much as possible /w tact cam (i heard turning Ai off is a must.. and i haven't dont that yet tbf). but her guard is just getting chewed through right after the barrier drops and im not generating enough of it fast enough.

its true im just starting the game, 2-3 hours in, but the content in the hinterlands is just messing me up, its killing me a little bit that i cant keep those 2 templars controlled when varric and solas takes out the ranged.

Any help would be appreciated thank you.

Nightmare is impossible atm. Tactical combat is worse then in DA2. In buildings and caves you cant zoom out more then 1 or 2 meters.

You're running mage/rogue/2hd Warrior in addition to your tank you mean?  Or are you trying to tank on Nightmare with a 2hd Warrior.  Because, yeah, you can't do that.

Nightmare isn't impossible, I'm currently playing on Nightmare with Friendly Fire.  It's hard.  But that's why it's called nightmare.

I agree the tac cam needs a bunch of love, but it's not impossible.

Im making progress but its honestly like hitting your head on a pole sometimes... so if you have any advice or tips. how to get more guard etc. i;d love it.

I went from being utterly and completely frustrated with combat on Nightmare, to it isn't that bad and not even using potions for 90% of fights when I turned all AI off. It requires complete turn based management, but i find it much more enjoyable than the alternative.

At the start of a fight, make sure you've got barrier, then use Challenge for some guard, war cry or what have you, just make sure you're managing guard well.

I've said this before and I'll say it again, nightmare works best with 1 tank and 3 ranged characters. Use 2 mages for double the amount of barrier. Make sure your always exploiting the combo system for large amounts of extra damage.

That's how I rolled a lot in DA2 on nightmare, yeah.  It's very effective.  You can also make mage + ranged rogue + sword and board + 2hander work though it takes a lot more microfiddling.  Anything else is questionable.

Like when I would bring Isabela along for kicks in DA2.  Not ideal.  She go dead.

But, yeah, a sword and shield tank to pull all the attention plus 2 mages for crowd control and ranged damage plus a rogue for ranged damage and utility stuff is probably the best way to go.  I hope I don't have to start over AGAIN to do that. :P

Nightmare is far from impossible.  I actually find it easier than DA2 nightmare initially was (I am playing nightmare with FF).  Few tips to get you started:

Tank:  Invest in the Vanguard tree exclusively at first, with maybe a point in shield for payback.  You want to set your warrior to cast as many guard building abilities as possible as quickly as possible.

Rest of party:

2 mages:  take 2 points in in frost to get winters chill (cc) and the mana regen talent, the rest goes in to spirit, beeline for upgraded barriers.  Dispel magic is amazing, it quickly stripping defenses from enemy mages, Dispelling fields created by certain mobs and insta killing mobs if you use it before they are fully summoned on rifts.  Revive will save your bacon a lot. For tough fight disable barrier autocast so you can control when where and who it is used on.

1 rogue -archery specialist.  go for the top tier ability pronto, if playing with ff disable explosive shot and the leap back (you will want to manually control all aoe).

I'm level 8 so far and I can take out some of the level 12 rifts in the hinterlands (with difficulty/reloads).  Same level stuff isn't a problem at all.

Don't you mean vanguard? Battlemaster is pure offense.

Stupid I know, but check the level of your opposition, anything more than 2 level diff, back out.

Have you compared Cass and your character's constitution stats? Cass is built as a tank, maybe she's just best suited for tank than you until you level up a bit. And yes, go defence only and find a high DPS sword to compensate...
