From a fluff perspective?

Chief over a single rank and file Space Marines and Shephard, even a biotic Shephard.

Over higher end 40k characters? It's hard to say.

You forget that each Space Marine is equal to an army of ordinary soldiers.
Space Marines are just ridiculously overpowered.

Gordon Freeman would still win.

I am not going to dignify the Freeman comment, I have never understood what the attraction was with that guy....

Nonetheless Space Marines are ridiculous foes to be sure, their genetic engineering equipment and resolve make them incredibly lethal. They are at heart a fighting force however, your rank and file while highly flexible in a stand up fight simply can't match the near limitless flexibility, tactics, battle intuition and covert capabilities of MC, plus he is really lucky.

Take a look at the DoW40K: Dark Crusade introduction video. Space marines gets owned and they're just acting lame.

Don't quote DoW40K games, go read the rulebooks and the codexes.

Those Gauss Weaponry are just lovely. Just lovely.

To quote:
They are magnetically based weapons that break down the target into its component molecules layer by layer and attract the molecules back to the gun at incredible speed. This creates a flaying effect and can vaporise the most heavily armored warrior or blast a hole in a Land Raider. This means that even the most basic Necron Warrior has a chance to blast a hole through the heaviest armor and completely vaporise the most skilled Space Marine.

If you compare a Spartan and a marine (neither with the benefit of plot armor) then the marine wins. If you compare a spartan vs marine and the marine is favoured by the author then the marine wins. Same goes if the spartan is favoured by the writer.

So purely talking from a "technical" point of view the marine pwns the spartan.

Oh - and if you want to use the Dark crusade video as proof of marines being sucky. The Necrons are marines taken up to eleven. They havn't even started using any WAR equipment and have wiped out almost everything else in the galaxy at one time or another. Their "god" put the fear of death into every single living organism in the galaxy so yeah. Dying when fighting them is sort of expected.

Wow.... really pulling out the Warhammer 40K, is that necessary?

Anyways, to be honest I dont think MC could beat Shep.... not even Soldier Shep (Which is quite fun to play in all honesty people need to not be so stingy because 'Ohhhh itll be just like a shooter with soldier' give it a try.) all bs aside I just think that Shepard is better trained and needs less "modifications" to kick ass.

I feel I have to get in on this rediculous conversation. Both Halo and Mass Effect are probably my two favourite game series' so far on the Xbox and Xbox 360. Got all of the novels for both series' so far as well.

And I have to say... Master Chief would probably win. If we're talking about the realism dictated in the novels, I can't see there being any way a biotic could even let an attack out while under fire, which I'm sure Shepard certainly would be if pitted against Master Chief. Master Chief is essentially a robot ninja. Even if he did get thrown or lifted he'd survive the fall because, and my memory might be a little sketchy here as I haven't read the books in a while, a medical foam is automatically applied to his wounds.

If we were to say that each other's shield's worked in the same way regarding the weapons, were Master Chief to have a plasma pistol or rifle, it would tear Shepard's shields to shreds and probably melt right through his armour as well. That said, Shepard could probably do the same thing back with the overload ability and then shred it up with his assault rifle.

There are also way too many possible abilities at Shepards disposal that to go through them all would take forever. I still think, however... while it would be close in this case, Master Chief wins. Pretty much because he's a ninja in a suit that makes him two times faster and four times stronger.

Why don't you pit Shepard up against the main character of my all-time favourite game series?

Commander Shepard of 'Mass Effect' vs. Abe of 'Abe's Oddysee'. No contest... Abe has this.

Ooh. Now that's something I'd like to see.
Preferably from a safe distance with a telescope.

That battle will probably never end.

so damn booooored!

Theres no such thing as a fair fight with Masterchief.  He has the superior armor (even if Shepard wore two Collosus X armors over himself) and The Chief is genetically augmented.  Faster reaction time, greater endurance, faster regeneration, the ability to lift an excess of 100 tons, (The Chief can flip over a Tank for crying out loud!) etc

Shepard is simply out-gunned by a living human weapon.

Id argue that Masterchief is equally/better trained AND has "Modifications" to kiss ass.

From a purely "combat" point of view where hand to hand isn't allowed, the Chief would win because he has access to particle based weapon technology, and ME shields cannot block energy based weapons in canon. If hand to hand distance were allowed, Shep might have the advantage with biotics... but Shep is still an ordinary man. The Chief KO's brutes in hand to hand... and they weight half a metric ton. Chief would splatter Shep all over the place, but it's not like its a fair fight. Shep is like a really, really peak human being, whereas Chief has been made into a living weapon since age six.
