I seem to have a little trouble taking on the Commander as a Reaver, he just mows me down and whenever I'm on Rampage he pushes me back down and starts spinning around with his giant sword of reach. Usually I'm fine for about....twenty or so seconds, but once I'm stunned/knocked down, I'm in for a very unpleasant ride. I sometimes feel like I'm better off letting the ranged people bait his slow butt around and have me just hunt down the adds.
How do you tank the Templar Commander?

Kite him rather than try to block him. Keep him distracted and away from the ranged while heckling the mooks. If you're using the 'potion room' at the beginning, it's easier to chokehold the enemies while your team takes the big guy down, Hallways similarly but the multiple entryways makes it more difficult.
A Legionnaire COULD stand about taking the hits with Fortress, but even that will only last so long. A Reaver? Not as well.

Kiting him worked wonders for our all-mage group today. He points like he's going to take names, and gives you time to run before he leaps into the air. Pretty funny.
Our necromancer kited him while the rest of us knocked out the adds.

the legionnaire can do it at lvl 9 after he gets the bottom of the tree fortress ability on the easiest difficulty, that combined with guard and the knowledge of when to use them to counter his special attacks are the only way I can think of to tank the Templar commander, and you can not do it indefinitely and the only times I did it was with everything else going after the rest of the team
he is the hardest boss in the multiplayer so far

I seem to have a little trouble taking on the Commander as a Reav
As everyone is stating, the templar commander is weak to a good kite.
Probably the easiest thing to do, is stick someone on the commander,
that is well suited to kiting. All that person needs to do is keep damage
up on the commander and it will leave the group alone. Everyone else,
clear up adds (if you see ranged aggroing your kiter, help out). Probably
the most important thing for a tankier character with this approach, is to
get on rogueish type enemies as soon as possible. I'd usually save
mighty blow for rogues as reaver here.
A reaver can pretty much destroy everything else without any worries
for this fight. So just focus on that. When all littles are done, then selectively
attack the commander when it's safe to melee. By that point, aggro
should be firmly attached to your kiter.
