Having a really hard time keeping my party alive

So I've been playing RPGs and just Dragon Age for a very long time; so I have a pretty good general idea of how to set a party up, however, not being able to have a healer makes me a bit crazy and unable to set up a comfortable party. I set my main character up as a Qunari mage; she focuses in Storm skill tree and has Flashfire and Barrier without any additional upgrades. I really am mostly just looking for advice in certain skills in the trees and which are more effective. My party (I have every recruitable character so don't be shy about advising a new party set-up) consists of and I'll include their skill trees that I mainly focus in order of most important:
Inquisitor (Storm, Spirit and Inferno)
Dorian (Inferno) <-- he also has necromancy unlocked and I was curious how important necromancy is
Cole (Double Daggers)
The Iron Bull (2h Weapon, Vanguard)

Tactics are really confusing to me in this game as well because they're not as expansive as they were in DA2, at least in my opinion.

I had just gotten to the part where

Spoiler
and there was no hope in me progressing so i had to load a previous save right before I went to that map (thank god i saved there)

So I was wondering if anyone has any tips or pointers in making this a bit easier for me strategically; I'm not really a big fan of the pause function tbh; never really used it in any DA.

Also, is there a potion to reskill/restat like in DA2? and if anyone needs me to post my equipment to i can do that.

First: Buy your reskill potion in the Undercroft at Skyhold.  It costs like 345 coins.

Skills and Tactics:

1) Give Iron Bull  Warcry and Challenge (plus upgrades) and then set those skills to 'preferred' so he will use them when available over other skills.

2) Have Dorian learn barrier + upgrade and set that as a preferred skill.  If you have the points have him invest 1 more point in to spirit to learn the decreased threat skill.  I think the beginning of the Necromancy tree stacks well with fire (panic/fear).  I haven't gone all the way down it--just unlocked his focus ability.

3) Try to cast barrier yourself on Iron Bull/Cole after Dorian's barrier goes down.

4) Cole...honestly I struggle with him myself.  He seems squishy.  I had him learn stealth, decreased threat and knockout powder in one tree.  Then in his specialized tree you can have him basically learn another knockout powder skill.  This (hopefully) allows him to put groups of enemies asleep when Iron Bull doesn't hold aggro.

Other than that I don't have much else to add.  I found around level 12 when I had a decent number of skills and set taunts/barrier to preferred status while having my DPS also try to inflict fear/panic/sleep I was able to go through most fights without too much trouble. I think in fights where I fight one tough thing (like Dragons) my DPS is a bit low and can be problematic.

Your tank is an issue. Two handers are okay for off tanks and Normal but beyond that sword and board is the way to go. Cassandra or Blackwall. The best party setup I've found is tank, archer, DPS mage and support mage. Your tank skill should focus soley on guard generation and the damage mitigation offered in the Sword and Shield skill tree. Support mage should be keeping a barrier over your tank at all times and be dispelling enemy status affects and barriers. Archer and DPS mage take out ranged first and concentrate on setting up combos for damage maximization. This is working well for me anyway.

I haven't played Mage yet but to do it easily you need a separate Mage to cast Barrier so you can do offense.  I'd take one of the Sword and Shield guys with me and that leaves an optional spot open in the party.

Blackwall as vanguard+champion /w SnB passives is completely unkillable.

I play on hard, blackwall never die. If my whole team dies other than blackwall, it is faster to reload for me than wait for blackwall to die atm ;)

Well that's it!

I feel like 2h can be just a good at tanking, I just need to focus him in other skill trees. I mean, I really hate Cassandra and Blackwall and I have a knack for sticking with only characters that I like; so I want to learn how to make The Iron Bull a viable tank even if he is better at off-tanking.

Yeah, Cole was a big problem for me in the fight i was talking about; i set warcry as iron bull's starred ability but he just couldn't pull hate on mobs and Cole would be down in two, even sometimes one arrow shot. i'm gonna try your suggestion though, it's pretty similar to what i have/what i wanted to try out anyway.

So I have to have a mage using barriers in my group?

No, but having at least 1 mage is very beneficial. I guess you can have 4 warriors and all focus on swapping the taunts and guard generation. Or 4 rogues that pretty much "Stealth, traps, attack, repeat"

Just leave Cole out entirely of your party.  He's a dual wield rogue which is a broken class for the AI to use because the AI doesn't really flank.  I had a main as a dual wield rogue which I switched to archer, not by choice but by necessity.  The game is noticeably easier now with that switch, despite the same difficulty (hard).

As for the other characters, yeah I agree the tactics are a bit rough.  I wish there was a better way to keep each character attacking the thing they're already attacking and not switch to attack what my character attacks.  It's just stupid that the game doesn't seem able to recognize when control needs to be given back to the player.

I am trying to understand why Cass is so good at guard and Blackwall is so bad at it. I specced him out exactly the same way as her because she was surviving so well.
