Serious question here. Every other race can have beards. Even female dwarves can have beards. But elves can't have beards. Just why?

Did the creators come down in some obscure text of lost elvish lore and proclaim that "Thus shall the children have their faces forever shaved, for it is the mark of all true people of Elvhenan"?

I just don't understand why elves don't get to have beards, or see a reason behind it outside of wanting every elf to look like Orlando Bloom and Liv Tyler from Lord of the Rings?

EDIT: After reviewing what others have written on these forums about the elves, and experiencing it for myself, I now know that there are far worse things about the male elf then a lack of beards.

Like how my elves arms look like he's just come off of a rack.

Beards are pretty awful in this game anyway, so I consider male elves lucky. They don't have to be subjected to the plastic face masks that pass for facial hair in DA:I, which also floats in mid-air a few inches from the face.

Bioware really, really needs to work on their hair modeling skills. It's not 2009 anymore, hair helmets just don't cut it.

Set Mesh Quality to High/Ultra.

Blackwall's beard is pretty epic then.

Elves don't have beards, because I believe they don't have body hair at all - it's race specific feature.

In all honesty, I have no idea why they decided to keep that tradition.

Honestly I just don't get why devs keep making male elves such pansies. Here some examples of lithe yet bad ass elves. BREAK. THE. MOLD!  ;)

I've got a male elf BioWare could take some notes on when improving their male elves in a future patch...

I'm playing with everything set to Ultra. Nope, there are still no beards. Just the floating plastic face shields.

Yup, the beards floating 2 inches from your face is pretty annoying, I mean how could they even mess it up that bad?

The tradition is that elves tend to be androgynous and "nymph-like" in their appearances. Instead of being overly voluptuous or overly stocky, they are well toned and lithe. Instead of facial hair, they have that quasi-flawless, soft skin. Elves are somewhat intended to be "impish" - even mischievous. Those two things imply an air of childishness, hence the lack of facial hair which would, instead, imply maturity.

If you're really bent on getting facial hair, the closest you can get in this game is one of the complexion tones. One of the sliders closer to the right gives your face a bit of a five o'clock shadow.
