Just curious of what are some of the more popular/best suited/most canon race and class combos out there? As with most people I'm going through the create a character and delete it five minutes into the game phase, and just trying to get some insight from others. First character I played for any significant time was a human DW rogue, deleted it because I decided I wanted my human character to be a warrior.

I'm thinking around the ideas of;

Human - Warrior (Templar)

Dalish - Rogue (Tempest)

Qun - Mage (Necro)

Dwarf....not really into playing them.

Currently on my first character (male elf mage) and planning to spec him either as a Rift Mage or Necromancer. Rift Mage suits a Dalish considering the use of Stonefist while Necromancer is more of a focus on the Entropy tree.

As far as other race/class combos, I'd say:

Human- Definitely warrior or mage. For non-mages, a noble groomed in the service of the Chantry would best fit around a warrior, either as Champion or Templar. Even if he/she is not religious, I can see him/her being trained in that field or expressing an interest due to familiarity. For mages, a Knight Enchanter is the best bet since the fighting style is very 'Circle Mage-y'. Necromancer second for non-lawful/more darker characters.

I can't see a rogue for humans due to his/her background personally, but I suppose an assassin fits (trained in archery/espionage).

Elf- Rogue or mage. They're relatively very skinny, so I can't see an elf in bulky armor wading on the front lines or wielding a gigantic sword without anime/jrpg comparisons. For a rogue, I'd say go the archer route (elves and archery, stereotypical I know) and the assassin tree best suits a Dalish hunter. A tempest 'could' work as well, a Dalish who spent his/her time experimenting with various concoctions and testing them on their prey.

For a mage, as I said before, a Rift Mage suits a Dalish best (Stonefist) though Necromancer isn't too unusual.

Dwarf- Normally I'd say warrior, but a rogue suits a dwarf better due to his/her association with the Carta (and being sent as a spy to the Conclave). Pretty much any weapon style and specialization works here. Assassins are for the cutthroat, get the job done in the best and most efficient way possible types. Artificer for the clever ones who like to spring traps (and dwarves are mechanical). Tempest for the crazies who like to douse themselves and wade into battle.

For a warrior Cadash, a more heroic dwarf might do well as a Champion or Templar, possibly one who had a past but turned a new leaf and took up a new way. Templar for pro-Chantry dwarves (as a surfacer, its possible Cadash believes in the Maker) while a Champion is more neutral. Reaver could work for a thuggish dwarf, best to go with a two hand style for maximum damage.

*Ironically, dwarves are the most versatile in terms of class/weapon/specialization choices as opposed to others, even human.

Qunari- Due to their size, I really don't see Qunari as rogues, though it wouldn't be lore breaking if they were. Personally I'd prefer warrior (they are big, tall and strong after all) then mage.

For warriors, a Champion for a more defensive qunari and a Reaver for a more chaotic one. Templar doesn't suit a Qunari well unless you rp them as a converted Tal-Vashoth. Still, they just don't seem very Chantry-like.

For mages, I would go with a Necromancer since a Tal-Vashoth would probably gain more by intimidating and manipulating his/her foes. A knight enchanter could work given the qunari's size and general likelihood of wading in the front lines no matter what. Rift mage with the focus on the AoE rings can also work.

Pretty much any specialization works with rogues given the qunari is a Tal-Vashoth mercenary and thus more versatile (not nobility or having a strong predefined culture). A more clever, tactical qunari would be placing traps as an Artificer. The qunari do use toxins, flasks and concoctions a lot, so Tempest isn't unusual. An assassin works with agent-style Qunari.

(Just my thoughts)

I really like the suggestions CL, most of the reasoning I highly agree with. It's a shame origin backstory isn't more customizable to provide alternative possibilities. I think im going to just go ahead and start with a Human Templar and finally get some depth into the story. Maybe Dwarf/Dalish rogue, as I still can't justify making a Qun rogue; their pure size justs make it hard for me to see one creeping around in the shadow. My last choice would remain as a Qun Mage, because I really feel a fire/necro build would compliment their dark asthetics

EDIT: Changing it up. Qunari Rogue assassin (female without the horns), OR a black-haired dwarf rogue. Both Dual Wield.

Male Human Mage.  Just like the Champion and the Warden.  This makes the Champion and the Warden cousins and, as my character is from a Noble family as well, I pretend they are all three distantly related :P

Human: Knight Enchanter or Necromancer Mage

Dwarf: Reaver 1h+shield or Champion 1h+shield

Qunari: Reaver 2h weapon.

Elf: Artificer Bow and Tempest duel wield.

I have not unlocked the specialization yet, but from what I have read online, these specialization fit with the races.

Human: All base classes but two-handed warriors work, really. Reason for this is because if you weren't a mage, you were trained to be a Templar. In lore, we have S&S Templars (Templar Guardian), dagger Templars (Templar Hunters), and archer Templars (Templar Marksman), but none that use a two-handed weapon. Still, even that could be adjusted to fit with a bit of tweaking. For specs, Templar is an obvious fit for pro-Chantry characters and Champion for good-but-not-lawful characters, though I'm having a hard time seeing Reaver. All the rogue classes fit--it's not inconceivable that the youngest child in a noble family took a liking to tampering with traps or potions in their spare time, and Assassin helps fit the Templar Hunter image even more.

For mages, Knight Enchanter is obvious. It's a Circle Mage spec, you were raised in a Circle, what more could you want? Necromancer is second if your Inquisitor likes to walk the darker side of magic, and Rift Mage is dead last.

Elf: Definitely no two-handers here. Elves in this game have twig-like arms, and wielding a sword as big as they are breaks my suspension of disbelief. I can vaguely see a sword-and-shielder, but archery rogue and mage are the best fits. Artificer is probably the best choice for a lore-wise spec, since as a hunter you spent your time shooting and trapping prey. Mages have the reverse of humans in terms of most believable specialization--Rift Mage is the closes fit, then Necromancer, and finally Knight Enchanter.

Dwarf: Considering you ran with the Carta, DW rogue for sure. All specs fit--if you're an Assassin, you were a hit man; if you're an Artificer, you were the sapper of the group; if you're a Tempest, you were the guy in charge of whipping up concoctions. That said, I can see a two-handed warrior working as more of an enforcer--the guy who gets sent to bully people, in which case you want Reaver. Or, alternately, you can turn over a new leaf and become a Champion. If you really hate mages, then choose Templar for maximum magic resistance.

Qunari: All classes fit. Any weapon style works for warriors, though two-handers are more associated with Qunari than a sword and board. Reaver is stereotypical blood-thirsty DPS monster. Templars can work since your parents might have converted to Andrastianism when they fled the Qun. I find Champion least likely thanks to your mercenary past, but like the Dwarf, there's nothing saying you didn't decide to atone for your history. Rogues and their specs are similar to Dwarves in this regard--Assassins were, well, assassins, Artificers were sappers, and Tempests alchemists. Mages are either Rift Mages or Necromancers, because I have a hard time envisioning a Tal'Vashoth being allowed to even approach a Circle, mage or no.

Human Mage - Knight Enchanter (Circle Specialization and they look like they have the arms to swing a lightsaber..err...I mean Spirit Blade)

Elven Mage - Rift Mage (Dalish Mages would probably welcome the usage of the Beyond as a weapon itself, far more than say, using a Circle specialization or death magic)

Elven Rogue - Archer Artificer (They are hunters, hunters use traps)

Qunari Rogue - Dual Weapon Tempest (their race has a very close relationship with offensive chemistry, from qamek to vitaar)

I decided to add on to my old post:

  • Human: Probably a S&S warrior (tank)
  • Elf: Mage (rift Mage in particular)
  • Dwarf: 2h warrior/DW Rogue (though many people seem to have a hatred of that set up)
  • Qunari: Same as the Dwarf

I haven't yet reached max level, but I thought about something just recently. Wouldn't the idea of having access to one extra ability point with humans make them significantly just a better choice than any other class? Just that at level cap you would have one extra ability or passive than any other race would.

Oh, and I've decided to go with a Human Rogue, basically because I don't wan't to end up with the level of OP a KE is, and I'd prefer the AI to tank.

So after trying all the human class combos, I have to say that mage fits the human story best.

dwarf dw rogues is good, and so is qun 2h warrior (if the player is in charge of the character. Not really interested in elves.

Just to point out, the human isn't necessarily sent to Templars. It says Templars or in service to the Chantry. You could be a brother/sister or some other functionary. Your training could have been with your family's guard. You're not forbidden from a 2h warrior. I mean, hell, even the cover/iconic Inquisitor has a 2h sword.

Qunari make good rogues. They get a melee defense boost, so you could probably get away with a more toe-to-toe type with one. And funnily enough, the Arishok was a rogue. They're also known for explosives and other devices. And it seems like his Qunari always had spies and knew secrets in Kirkwall.. those big guys could hide for some reason.

From a gameplay standpoint?

Qunari - every dps. (Vitaar yo)

Dwarf - tank. (25% magic defense? priceless!)

For looks?

Human - everything.

If we had more voice options, I might enjoy other races more. I feel the lighter male voice only fits a human, and the darker one a qunari.

Though if they would scale the qunari's dagger up and make their heads less humanoid, and give them some qunari-only-armor, I might choose qunari over human for the most part. The Arishok looked badass!

Reading through some of the RP standpoints, I'm now a bit off with using Human and planning to spec into Reaver. Being raised to be in service of the Chantry it all, I don't know how to justify the spec choice storywise other than saying "cuz I'm the Inquisitor, b*****s!" Although becoming a templar at the point in time seems moot as well, as the conclave is in ruins, and most of the order "has lost their way" Can't comment on champ though. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fit Reaver to the bio?

There could be a couple ways to spin it, but I could see going the "Darth Vader" path being interesting. A quick summary:

You have become disillusioned by the Chantry's dogmatic view and how they (don't) respond to the the Temple attack. Looking for ways to not only empower yourself but the Inbquisition you search for another way to  take action. Seeing Iron Bull (if you choose to accept him) handles himself in battle you inquire about his fighting style/methods and become intrigued. A means to take action and make a difference. Then take it from there.

*Snip*

That is a pretty interesting way to look at it. Thanks! I wanted to spin a story focusing on one key point of the Reaver which is "the more you are hurt, the harder you fight" My toon is the main tank of the group at the moment. I mean that plus that gives it some martyr vibe going on somewhere. Although I can't figure out how you fit "you rip into the heart of your foes" in that picture. Hah.

I have thought about it, and here is my official list from best fitting to worst fitting:

  • Human Mage-for the backstory, as a human mage would have more at stake than the other two human class combos
  • Dwarf DW Rogue-again for the backstory. A dwarf is a member of the Carta, which is lyrium smuggling, so they would likely send a rogue (DW more likely obviously) to the conclave
  • Elf mage (female) or archer (male)-I personally feel that both of these fit rather well, and make the most sense, while still making little sense as to why either would be at the conclave since it would not have much to do with the Dalish.
  • Qunari 2h warrior-the only thing I can think of is because of their size. I do not feel that the Qunari would have any real obligation after the conclave at all, so it makes no sense to help the inquisition.

Taking the lore somewhat into account, my choices would be:

Elf - All combinations they have access to either as Mages or Rogues fit perfectly well. Warrior Elf sounds odd, and Templar Elf definitely doesn't sound right.
Qunari - Anything, except Templar and Knight Enchanter.
Dwarfs - Anything except Templar. If he had access to some thematic weapons, Dwarf Artificer would be the most epic thing ever.
Human - Honestly I would only choose a Human if I wanted to play a Templar.

I enjoyed my Qunari Mage. She felt like an outsider during the initial portions of the game, but trained as a Knight-Enchanter to assure observers in the Chantry that she was going to work with their traditions rather than burn it all down.

On the flip side, my Human Warrior, who was devout from the start, went Reaver, because he decided that what the Chantry needed was not yet another Templar, but someone who could strike back at Corypheus no matter how hard he hit them (and he'd already hit them pretty hard).

Currently playing a female dwarf archer/assassin. OP doesn't know what he is missing. Made one specifically because scout harding is my favorite npc, she has far less dialogue than your actual companions but seems a hell of a lot more interesting than any of them. Other than that, you can make any race/class combo and have a good canon reason for it really. Even something like a qunari templar.  After all, the entire story for this game is centered around the player character being someone that the rest of the world doesn't accept at the onset anyway. So be as odd as you please with your race and class pairings.

For humans, the best suited seem to be a warrior or mage, particularly the Templar and Knight-Enchanter specilizations. These suit the family's ties to the Chantry (not to mention how integral the Chantry is to the story).

For elves, archer and mage are the most fitting. Rift Mage would seem best suited for mage. Knight-Enchanter is derived from Arcane Warrior traditions, so you could tie that in, although it's ultimately a Circle tradition.

Dwarves, rogues certainly fit due to the Carta connection. Any of the specializations fit, really. A non-Templar warrior would be fine though.

Qunari says warrior to me, but a mage is an interesting choice. Templars, again, probably wouldn't fit.

But hey, anything can work. Take the Qunari Templar - it's an odd choice, but maybe your Qunari sees the damage that mages and demons have wrought on the world and wants to learn to combat them. The PC is an exceptional character so anything can go, but some definitely feel more 'right' than others.
