I also don't really understand the "tactical view". Is it really a big shift? It's been awhile for me, but wasn't it simply a matter of changing the camera angle in Origins? There was no two different modes but rather was left to the player on how to play it. I'm with you that far worse than no auto attack is the simplification of tactics. I loved that I could set several situational instructions to each character.
In DAI, it's a bit different. The camera in tactical view's a bit further zoomed out, and you can still adjust the angle. While you're in tactical view, your character auto-attacks without pressing a button. You also need to be in tactical view for it to display what abilities your party members are using without pausing. The camera in tactical view can move around by the same rules as a character (except it can move while paused), which took some getting used to. The only drawback is you can't use WASD to move your character while in tactical view (you can still move by right-clicking, which has been improved by showing you what path the character plans to take). I hardly ever leave tactical view in combat.
