I have asked everyone in Skyhold about a gift for Sera, except Varric. Every time I attempt to speak to Varric, he tells me he "really needs to write some letters", and no dialogue options appear. I've exhausted my other options in Skyhold to try and get him to start talking, and even left, did a mission, and came back to Skyhold. He's still writing letters.

 

I'm unsure if this is a bug, or if I simply haven't completed whatever task is required to make him stop writing all those damn letters. I'd like to see what happens during this gift-giving, but my most recent manual save is before Adamant. I don't want to play through all of that again just yet.

 

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

I had this happen to me too, after a specific story mission which I am sure you just finished as well. What I did was went to the world map and loaded into an area (I went to the Hinterlands), and slept in one of the tents at the camp you spawn at, then re-loaded into Skyhold, and talked to Varric. He had a short cutscene and you talk to him for a bit, and then after that talk to him again and you should be able to ask him about the gift under the option that says [Special]. Hope this helps!
