Every so often in battle I will see Varric or Solas' icons briefly appear on the screen mid battle. However it comes and goes too quickly for me to read the tiny text that goes with it. Is this a status effect or something?

Im not sure about it but i think these icons apper if their healt is low

Yeah, it's a low health warning.
