So I’m looking for some guidance on difficulty settings for DA2

Due to real-life commitments I’m unable to play until next week. But since the game is out I’m hoping people can weigh in on how the difficulty settings feel.

In terms of platform I am primarily in this question as it pertains to PC on keyboard/mouse. Not because PCs better etc. I’m just an old PC gamer and have no interest in becoming proficient with console controllers.  Having said that if console gamers who have experimented with friendly fire and tac-cam have some thoughts I’m interested.

From the reviews I have read it’s clear to me that the game is solidly skewed in the direction of action combat – disappointing to me as a tactical style gamer but not the end of the world.

The question for me then boils down to how (or IF) increase the difficulty will drive the game towards more tactical gameplay.

Increasing difficulty is a complex question as it relates to so many dimensions – gear, level, consumables, gameplay style etc. But in the end, here is what I want to know –

  1. Difficulty curve/difficulty spikes –  how does the game handle the difficulty curve? In particular how hard are difficulty spikes when facing bosses/major encounters?
  2. How is difficulty balanced? Do they increase health? Increase damage? Decrease cooldowns? Increase AI quality? I REALLY dislike increasing difficulty just by adding more and more health so that combat becomes an endurance contest. I prefer it when damage is increased so that combat is just as fast, but so that mistakes are punished.
  3. What about friendly fire? I hear it can be toggled but based on reading up on the abilities it looks like this is just an afterthought option – I don’t see the game being designed for interesting gameplay in a friendly fire context – I hope I’m wrong.
  4. General thoughts on tac-cam – I’ve heard some people say that the pause and play features are WORSE than DA2 (because even harder to pull back). If that’s the case then that’s very sad.

Any thoughts/comments on these points very much appreciated.

Without a breakdown of the points I can say that playing as a lightning mage on hard, I have yet to use the tactical camera (mostly because it is garbage) and my only trouble was with enemies of 3-4 levels above me. So if you are looking for a challange I would say go directly to nightmare. On the other hand, if you just want the gameplay to be more tactical turn friendly fire on. But if you are not using AOE stuff, it won't matter much.
