Will doing all Hinterland sidequests over-level me for main quest?

If I finish all the side quests in Hinterlands... will I be grossly overleved when I go to Val Royeaux for first part of main quest?

In the Mass Effect trilogy and in earlier Dragon Age games, I always did all possible side quests before moving on... but without scaling to level in DAI, I worry about my char level in relation to main quest level.

Beyond Hinterlands, there's even like 3 other areas I can access before going on to main quest.

I'm confused as to the best course of action - I want to explore as much of game as possible, but still want to maintain a level-appropriate challenge.

Thanks

Not sure tbh, I may have experienced that as it was getting too easy. Given the ease and lack of tactics in the combat I decided to try a harder difficulty and that has helped my enjoyment (normal to hardened).

Might be an option for you to try? Then you don't have to worry as much about out levelling and feeling unchallenged in combat, and can freely do all the content.

Guys you really aren't supposed to "clear the map" before moving on.

There's a great post on reddit about this

I'll try to overlevel in the Hinterlands on my second character.

I agree with this, I finally had to put my exploring instincts on hold and just focus on getting Skyhold, now its a lot more open and theres even more stuff to do.

Plus you unlock all the cool tricks we've heard about after you do the story for a bit

Well I see his point, and being an "OCD Completionist" here, I'll just hit some things and quests in the Hinterlands, to get some power, and then move on :P to come back later

Well, at this point I'm level 10 and only have a few missions left so I'll probably clear it anyway. :D

Great. After spending one evening in Hinterlands I was wondering if I just should skip the rest of those quest markers. I think I will, maybe try to do the other stuff with later characters.

I do recommend you all skip the requisition quests. They're endless, mostly useless, drain resources, and repeat themselves after a (short) while.

If this is true then Bioware is seriously misunderestimating the anal-retentive and obsessive nature of the CRPG player.

I really wish they set some boundaries, though. Okay, I get it that a level 12 dragonling is not for my level 5 mage. But heck, I move down the path to pick up some elfroot, and then bam - a dragonling jumps out, fries me, and in seconds my whole party dies, I'm supposed to open a save from ten minutes ago. Not cool. Same with level 8 bears. The only warning I get - Cassandra saying "be careful" before a camp of level 8 bandits. Nobody even mentioned the level 12 dragonling.

That, and casual difficulty is not casual enough. I played HM ops and fps at SWTOR, I'm okay with hard, but here I want things to be easy, like ME3 casual - I want to be picking stuff while my companions fight. Instead? I nearly died at the end of the tutorial.

This is something I've experienced as well. I don't know why this is though. It should be a simple matter to set a casual difficulty, shouldn't it?

This is the best title ever on Reddit. Okay, maybe not, but it's pretty good.

Thank you for pointing this out. Due to some minor OCD I was indeed trying to clear the map (until I ran into some high level rifts).

I will just move on from now with the main story, thanks. I thought you where supposed to clear the map first.

You're a champ!

For me I stayed in the Hinterlands until I completed everything I could at my current level(between level 1 and 6, I believe) then left, and if I was about to run into an area of level 11 or higher I would leave it alone until I leveled up(To level up more you need to leave Hinterlands and open new areas and progress the story).

I am lvl 4 (should hit 5 soon). I've got half the required camps set up and have ordered the three watchtowers built, heading back to do the horsemaster wife's quest involving the wolves and then I want to finish getting the six camps going. After that I hopefully will be lvl 6 so is that a good time to think about leaving the Hinterlands for a bit?

*Spotted the Dragon last night and went "oh.dear.god.no."

* Got annihilated at a lvl 12 rift in under one minute. Very funny it was.

I wish I overleveled but I am on nightmare so that likely does factor in as well.

I'm honestly confused by people who find casual difficulty too hard.  I'm on normal and right now I'm casually beating elite Templars and demons with my hands tied behind my back.

Best line of that redditt post is here, and I emphasize it:

By the way - some stuff in the Hinterlands is clearly not meant to be done at the beginning. You got killed by a dragon? That rift is spitting out level 12 demons? YEP, that's Bioware telling you to MOVE THE **** ON and come back later.

This is where my OCD kicks in.  For some reason I feel like I have to clear an area before moving on, but I"m fighting it and I'm moving on to a new place.

I actually have a serious problem with this but I'm getting better. :)

I believe that the Main Quest may be scaled, as opposed to the overwhelming remaining material in the game. At least, I am not sweating over it.

They have recommended levels. So it's not scaled really.
