I have nothing to add to the above guides except to reinforce one thing: Fade Step. Always Fade Step. On any and every mage build. Its offensive, its defensive, it doesn't even cost you mana when you upgrade it. Not only is it crazy useful but it gives a much needed playstyle change to the potential monotony of being rooting in place wiggling your fingers all the time.
Get it, use it. The amount of stupid mage tricks you'll discover with it is fantastic.
Fade Step, upgraded post-lvl 12 is ridiculously awesome, especially if you decide to play as Knight Enchanter or a "up close and personal mage"
I have mastered full control over Frost Step and If there is one enemy I simply hit the power, mash the direction keys back and forth in perfect harmony and I can hit the same enemy (or a group) atleast twice (or three times), chilling them immediately and pop an immolate straight after. Glorious.
