I am officially divided.

I made my Mage first and for the longest time I adored my Mage and have played the crap out of it. I was planning on either the Necro or Knight Enchanter Spec. I got to a spot where I was feeling like a bit of change wouldn't hurt. So I decided to make an Archer and a Double Dagger Rogue to see what they felt like and I liked them alot actually.

The Archer felt a little underwhelming at first but I can see how later on it becomes far more effective overall especially if combined with the Artificer Spec.

The Double Dagger felt very active and very powerful in terms of burst and the Assassin spec seems like nuke after nuke. It was a welcome change of pace after being a stationary artillery barrage on my Mage.

I just want a little feedback on how effective each class is overall on the battlefield later on. On my Mage I found myself doing fine unless crap hit the fan and then obviously I have no way to escape. Meanwhile on the Rogue at any time I can simply stealth and get away. Granted with the Dagger Rogue I am going to be taking more hits than I would with my Mage.

Specifically I would like to know how they compare on the battlefield and also if the Archer is rewarding to play later on?

I cant speak for mages, however im playing a DD rogue atm, going for DD skills with poison skill from sabotage, my specialization will be tempest. So for i do alot of damage (lvl 8), i was hoping for going a non stealth rogue (kind of a duelist character) and using parry as my defensive ability, so far it hasn´t worked out so great and you are very squishy as a rogue out of stealth and parry is actually really hard to use (you need to time it just right). Outside of that its a blast to play, damage is sky high if you utilize your cross class combos well. I played mage in DA:O and DA 2 and i dont regret going rogue for first character in DA:I

I've always gone Rogue first. Nothing quite like flanking and backstabbing

If you want to rogue, take Archery rogue. Dual Weapon rogues are squishy as hell and they require investment into skill like Stealth, Hook & Tackle and even Parry to even work properly.

Whereas Archer rogues just stay back and deal a ton of damage. If some enemy comes near, stealth away or leap back or drop caltrops.

Much as a respect Ishten's badadd avatar..

I'd have to recommend the complete opposite.

DW Rogue is dynamic. Up close and personal. The tide of battle constantly shifting.  I love utilizing stealth and massive damage. It's more dynamic then the turret style classes;) and faster then warrior.

It takes finesse to stay alive, but that is part of the fun, evading your opponents only to surprise them and overwhelm them with a fury of critical damage.

Stealth DW works well. I'd love to have the points to add Sabotage, but I'll flex a pure poison trap build later. I have a feeling early builds will need to use stealth regardless of favored tree, but late-game Sabotage builds may not need to disappear with poison cloud, caltrops, etc.  Very happy with Rogue after I tried all the classes.

Dual Weapon rogues can work but they require more planning than other melee classes. They do not possess barrier regenerating magic blades, they cannot generate guards.

Obviously they have Stealth, Hook & Tackle, Parry and Evade but you only have 8 ability lock in combat so...

On your first playtrough i recomend mage, until you know the mechanics of the game better. I normally go for playtroughs Warriors-Mages-Rogues. But is all about preference and joy.

..They have more variety? ;)

Five to six offensive and three, two defense is good synergistic blend. Rogues defensive capabilities are more fun is one of  it's selling points.  I'm not just throwing up a barrier, I'm surprising my enemy, deftly avoiding danger, using speed and cunning to evade and finish them off.

I have done okay so far as my DW Rogue (lvl 8) but does the archer pump out comparable damage to the DW rogue if played correctly?

And that's the main reason why DW rogues are fun & rewarding to play. You actually have to get involved in the fight in a personal way to rip the benefits, you can't count on the tac AI or just mashing buttons.

Parry is good only vs a single opponent, vs most attacks / groups doesn't do a thing, you're better off manually evading / positioning as far as your survival goes.

If you go DW Rogue I recommend Assassin with the stealth perks,  along with the upgraded flanking strike. Also make sure to grab both of the stamina recovery perks from the DW and Sabotage trees to make sure you are always iin  stealth and always have stamina foe your abilities.

Dw rogue can dominate with the right spec on norm/hard, but some have voiced concerns about nightmare.

Since enemy hp increase with difficulty, and rogue must kill and run, that makes some sense.

If you are playing on norm though, i can attest to the power of Dw rogue. He was easily the strongest on my team.
, including my archer sera.

Can enemy be cc'ed? Take away all his hp with stealth, flank, winters grasp, twin fangs combo.
Clustered? Use spinning blades.

Heavy aoe, too dangerous to get close? Tempest spec with upgraded lightning flask and throwing blades sorted that out.

Also get an aoe dagger in mainhand and look for fadetouched material with chance to proc hidden blades.

Pretty random tips i know.

Also agree with shadow society. Focus on crit more than anything else. Getting stamina on crit is crucial, and my spinning blades ended up restoring more stamina than it used when i flank a group.
