I normally avoid romances altogether. If I go for one (in any game offering romance/sex, not just Bioware's RPGs), it's as a male character going for a female. It's not my cup of tea seeing two geezers snogging each others faces off, as I'm straight, so there's no chance of me selecting a gay romance.
It was terrible in Dragon's Dogma where we're forced into romance but at least the scenes didn't over do it (it's just one kissing scene after defeating the end boss). If romance is to be included in a game then I prefer it being optional.
I prefer playing with the idea that my characters are too dedicated to the mission to care about sex or they are asexual/celibate if I'm role-playing a religious character.
I liked Witcher 2's approach (somewhat). Whilst one scene is forced, it's still done well and makes sense for the pre-set character that Geralt is but I like how throughout the the rest of the game, you can either ignore romances altogether, have the quickies that are offered with various women or stay loyal to Triss. I seriously found the romance in Witcher 2 far more mature too. Bioware romances (aside from Morrigan's) feel like they've been torn from somebody's fanfiction or Twilight or something!
In The Witcher 2, I went for the romance with Triss in my first playthrough because it made sense because of Geralt's pre-set character and history and it wasn't cringe-worthy, it added to the story between the two when you have the option of defeating an entire army camp just to rescue her.
LOL and Dragon's Dogma's romance plot was god-awful especially when one of my characters ended up with the wrong woman (some random merchant woman) with the story that my character is fighting furiously against the Dragon just to rescue her. It made me feel as if my character was really fighting for the bargains and wares that the woman sold rather than for loving her! It was comedy at that point.
