Class: Input Devices
Rule #1
If your game supports keyboard & mouse and gamepad controllers, be sure they work fluidly together.
Description:
PC users vary and always have. Some PC gamers play on something other-than a console, because they want to use the vast number of keybinds and exact movement or aim of keyboard and mouse. On the other hand, some players want the console experience without the limitation of console hardware, lack of true upgrades, and freedom from proprietary corporate evil.
In either case, both users should have "ease-of-use" when using their prefered device(s). Games that have done this well are those that can change instantly from keyboard and mouse controls to controller. Two ways to control this situation: either allow both keyboard/mouse and controller to be used simultaneously throughout the entire game or allow switching in the menu, but keep simultaneous use in those menus.
DA:I
Dragon Age: Inquisition fails on every aspect of this rule. The game controller is not recognized when used alongside other gaming hardware that uses virtual devices (Razor/Belkin Nostromo for example). This is absolutely unacceptable. It's not a matter of just unplugging a device (which shouldn't be needed either), but rather it involves literally disabling part of another product's features just to make the developers of this game's jobs easier. It is absolute laziness and lack of skill that caused these developers to let this slip through the cracks. It also PROVES a lack of testing, making us paying customers the true "BETA testers".
Moreover, the mouse pointer never goes away when using a gamepad. These are VERY, VERY simple things that all developers in all companies see and TYPICALLY say to themselves "oops, we missed that, let us fix it right now so we don't look amateur".. and that's exactly what it did. It looks amateur!
On top of all those unacceptable flaws, there are design flaws in the K&M layout and use that makes the game feel clunky and presents K&M controls as an OBVIOUS afterthought. In other words, the K&M controls absolutely SUCK! I use a gamepad myself, but I tried it out to see what others were talking about and, yes, the K&M controls in this game are horrid.
BioWare, Your grade on this course is a big fat "F"!
