Some of those shards were a real PITA. The one in the Hinterlands was the very last one I finally got. I succeeded only because I'm an OCD nutcase who went through a large portion of the entire game jumping around all over places where I was probably not supposed to be able to go just to see what would happen and if I could get away with it. Actually found a couple of entertaining things that way - I suspect at least one was an Easter Egg for people like me...
That's exactly how I play the game. I blame TES for encouraging exploration and rock climbing. When I head for a waypoint on the map I don't look for roads, I make a beeline straight towards that destination and try to find a shortcut, even if it means jumping over a mountain.
Plus I like the view. That feeling you get when you finally scale a mountain that was probably never intended ... and you soak in the view if its not too obscured. Priceless
