Can't pick a class; finding Mages boring/ineffective

I'm going through my usual fit of not being able to pick a class; I've played through the prologue on Nightmare 8 times now and my current character is a Mage, but it's very underwhelming. I'm basically a barrier dispenser that does poor damage and has to hide from combat at all costs.

I guess I just need to hear opinions. If anyone can just tell me what they like and/or don't like about the class they're playing it may help me get an idea which class will feel right for me. Thanks.

Mages are a bit underwhelming for the first few levels. They certainly ramp up to be much more fun and useful, but you need to get them a few more skill points first.

Boring? Only you can say.

Ineffective barrier dispenser? Most certainly not.

I'm playing a 2h Warrior - that said, I end up playing as one of the mage companions in almost every encounter.

Give your mage time to become an indefensible part of your party.

Mage is total crap until you get levels.  Eventually you're able to CC anybody trying to kill you or, if you're a knight enchanter, just man fight them and punch them in the face until they die.

I've heard that Knight Enchanter gets crazy overpowered and I'm not really looking to make the game too easy later on either; I guess I just don't want my character to be there mainly for support.

After doing some looking around at skills Reaver seems like it would be challenging yet really effective if done right.  Anyone have any insights on how a 2-handed Sword Reaver fares on Nightmare difficulty?

I'm a level 8 mage now and I'm finding it really underwhelming. The damage output is just ridiculously low! Anybody have any tips here? The very best staff I can find is one with a dps of 47, whereas the rest of my team have weapons with a dps of around 100. It's makes the game so incredibly boring and making me feel very insignificant.

You don't need Barrier, I play Nightmare without it.  Almost every fight involves multiple targets and they're usually grouped, you want AoE.   Upgraded Chain Lightning and upgraded Immolate are your bread and butter.  Winter's Gasp when you need the freeze, Winter Stillness for mana.  That's your first 7 points.  From there head to either upgraded Static Cage or Fire Mine and Clean Burn.  Fire offers more damage, Static Cage offers more control.  Once you get Knight Enchanter it becomes a face roll and even Nightmare is soloable.

Rift Mage: Pull of the Abyss > Fire Mine > Stonefist (with upgrade).

Proceed to destroy everything. PotA sucks in pretty much everything that isn't a dragon or a boss. Perfect for dealing with Pride or Rage demons trying to bully your squishies.

I've been making Solas pull barrier duty, while I respec'ced into chain lightning+ and the other side of the fire tree.  Things just disintegrate; at level 8 I've been taking on Coast rifts that are level 12

I stopped running mages because the game was just way too easy with them and I only play on nightmare.. I had one fire mage using mainly firewall / firemine with the passive when I crit it resets cooldowns, my character was electric mage using mainly the electric forcfield and the skill in the middle which dmgs + paralyze and the other mage was frost / barrier mage mainly using blizzard / barrier. I paired them up with cassandra as a sword / shield mass taunting guard building warrior.

This was just so easy and I would constantly run areas 1 -4 lvls higher than myself. first just trap all the enemies in the electric force field and keep cassandra taunting from a distance outside of the force field while the other 2 mages cast blizzard + fire mine + fire wall + the other fire spell which just does an AOE explosion. Once the force field goes down cassandra has already taunted at least 1 enemy then as they run toward her with the mages behind I cast the AOE taunt to pull them all on her having the non flanking passive on her. So once again the enemies are all grouped up on her and I just repeat what I did in the force field but with my electric mage casting the single paralyze attack w/ high dmg and the other electric spell that fires like 12 or so shots with the fire staff + add on which gives 2% less resistance to staff type dmg. use fire staff and pair it up with the fire mages dmg its just so easy.

I wish this game was much harder, even on nightmare it is just way to easy. This is the easiest lineup to tear thru the game. Even with random groups it is still too easy, trying to find one which would make the game harder. I could just imagine how easy it would be if we had all the right AI settings like in the previous DA

most of the mages don't do much dmg by themselves outside of the fire skills. electric / frost is more of a lower - medium dmg with more slowing / crowd control. fire is just straight up damage though.

Out of curiosity, are you running with FF on? Because that literally changes everything.

I took down the dragon that is found in the Hinterlands with a party of all mages at level 11.  I tried with a mixed party and couldn't do it.  So far I have taken down 2 dragons and both with a party of all mages. I have a rift mage/fire/ice, Necromancer/ice, a mage with spirit/Ice, and one specced into fire/ice.  I don't use tactical combat since I have a PC and the tactical camera sucks for the pc.

I am really enjoying sword and shield tank.  You can really control the battlefield without changing characters with this class.  You can draw aggro and go toe to toe with boss types.  Having a good team to DPS and support your tank helps but I also feel like I don't have to worry to much about the companion AI as a tank as well.

I took down dragon with two mages and a ranged rogue. The dragon could not hurt my Inq.  I felt like I could use all 8 abilities in a way that requires timing and strategy the best with this class.
