Background: I have been a stalker of this game for months.  My wife is sick of hearing about it, and is wondering why she has felt single ever since release. Also, I am playing the PC version with maxed visuals (point of reference not bragging). Currently I am level 15.

I loaded the game on release day waiting for my jaw to hit the floor, and I must admit it did not happen. I played on and finished all of the hinterlands that I possibly could (mistake).  Finishing the hinterlands is what I believe created a few negatives in some reviews.  If you leave the hinterlands at say level 4 and eventually return I think you will find that you are much happier with the flow of the game.  I can't say why, but I will leave that as a suggestion.

Some things happen and eventually you are at skyhold and it is there that I finally felt that I had found exactly what I was hoping to in this game.  There is so much going on, so much great writing.  If you don't spend time on the side conversations and at least skimming the lore I really feel you remove yourself from the world and will diminish your experience.  If for whatever reason you are not "feeling" this game, I highly recommend at least getting to skyhold and then seeing how you feel.  I think it is there that you will find it "feels" better to do missed side quests and explore everything.

Other random thoughts:

Warriors: I have seen a few threads about warriors being boring.  I highly recommend you try the Reaver spec.  It is simply awesome.  You may have survival issues on hard and beyond.  I am playing on hard and need to be careful with him.

Melee: Your tank should be fine taking damage (hard difficulty) after about level 6 or 7 depending on spec thanks to guard build up.  However, I have found that controlling DPS melee and their durability is a little to be desired.

Mage: On higher difficulties you are completely reliant on Barrier.  I feel very fragile in a group that uses 2 melee and 2 range.  This is especially true if both of your range are not mage's with barrier.  .  Put simply, If I have 2 mages i never use potions if  I have 1 mage I use a good bit of potions.

Apparently there's a bunch of people saying that completing hinterlands or other areas 100% and THEN moving to the main story quest is a mistake. And as one who did those things exactly i got to agree. Not only i messes with the flow as you said but also i felt overleveled towards the end of the first "Act".I'm planning to be careful next time and not get my OCD take over me.I also suggest doing side stuff, and when you feel bored to go ahead and do main missions. The areas won't go away.

PS:Who says warriors are boring?I love my SnB tank and i haven't even unlocked the specialisations yet!

Honestly, the Hinterlands is so awesome and huge, it's like an entire game all by itself.  I definitely got caught up in it too, did way more than I really 'should' have at first, in future playthroughs I'll definitely do things differently.  It's an awesome spot in the game, but it's probably best to break it up and do a bit here, a bit there, throughout the game, rather than doing a ton at once.  There are so many incredible areas to see and explore, I'm just a bit past getting Skyhold right now and am absolutely overwhelmed by how many awesome places there are to go and incredible things to experience.  Even the phrase 'Game of the Year' doesn't really do this game justice :) .  While no doubt the Hinterlands are a super fun place to explore, try to pry yourself away from there every once in a while because there are SO many other awesome spots that are very much worth visiting too :) .

I also made the same mistake as you, finished Hinterlands before progressing. I actually enjoyed the exploring, so many beautiful places and codices to find!

But, boy, when I left...I wasn't ready or prepared. This game owns my heart now. I've spent 2 days playing DAI almost nonstop, I've screamed and cried of joy and sorrow with DAI.

@Wicked yes I would leave at 5 if you have the 4 power required.  Come back and do a bit more, possibly snag some companions, and possibly go to another area, and then maybe come back a bit more.  Just break it up.  The other areas in the game are AWESOME, and it helps get the flow going.  Now if you want to basically do it all then go ahead, I just don't think it is the most enjoyable way to tackle such a large area.

I will give kudos for DAI for finally making me ENJOY playing a warrior. (Still only 2handed, no shield, but its a step up)

I also made the HInterlands mistake and its the reason for all my complaining about sidequest and being bored with DAI. I started doing more other quest, not at Skyhold yet, but gotta say those other things were more interesting and I'm like the game a lot now.

After running into that fade rift near the Redcliff Farms camp that is all level 12 demons (with my level 6 character at the time) I was finally like ... "Okay, it's time to leave and go do some other things." I don't think The Hinterlands were intended to be completed all in one (long) fell swoop. You're supposed to come back to it later as the level of the enemies indicates.

I've only done the very first main quest in Val Rouyeux and recruited Vivienne and Sera and I have about half of the Hinterlands done, but I'm going to explore a couple of other recently opened areas now.

I did the mage quest at level 7 and it was probably the first real challenge in the main campaign. Even on normal it was challenging, but I still did not have to use up all my potions and there were plenty of potion caches around Redcliff so don't let your level limit where you take characters. I already feel like I can probably get by well enough on Hard with a little more micromanaging, but I generally do my first playthrough on normal just to get a feel for the game play and controls of the game. I'm sure each area has regions that range in difficulty to encourage multiple visits, similar to The Hinterlands. :)
