Some spoilers below...
Is there an ideal point to stop advancing the main story and go do some of the other regions? I ask b/c I did the vast majority of the Hinterlands, all of the Storm Coast, and a chunk of a couple of others before going to Val Royeux because I thought that section would be more important/significant than it was. It turns out that going there was what was needed to unlock a bunch of characters. Right now I'm at the point where I've recruited some mages and the push seems to be to go close the breach. Now I'm wondering if I should do that or go finish up exploring those other areas. My hesitation is that I would hate to go do an area only to recruit a character who would have been perfect to bring there after the fact.
