If you haven't had a chance to meet this pillar of importance.

Here's Krem.....a transgender character in Dragon Age that is respected, cared for and represented in a way that pushes our favourite medium ahead a hundred years. Bioware has out done themselves!

Cringed a bit, but it was nice to see Jennifer Hale's role

Anyone find Mark Meer?

Is Krem a him? I just assumed Krem was an androgynous cis woman, much like Brienne of Tarth.

Nope, he and Iron Bull make an emphatic point that Krem considers himself a dude.  Just with lady parts.

Oh ok. I haven't gotten that far yet, so thanks! That alleviates some misconceptions.

So, if you are not happy with your pre-chosen place in life in the sexually-divided triumvirate (with the exception of the Soul-path), you can approach to your Tamassran and say that you are in fact another gender, is that right? Because this looks more like the writer is the one talking, insterting modern morality, and not the Qunari.

Actually, I think a Qunari would have an easier time accepting Krem as a man because Krem is a warrior.  In the Qun, you can't be a woman and a warrior.

Even so, I wonder how many Quanri blatantly lie about it just so they can chose another job outside their sexually defined path.

I don't see how it's important to gaming, is not like his presence made the game anything better.

In fact the whole scene was quite cringey (imo).

What's that? It's Pat!

But honestly, it just doesn't work within the setting. I could understand if the elves, or Tevinters or Orlesions had this kind of system, but for the Qunari this doesn't make any sense. The Qunari are all about predetermination and placing someone where they belong. The most important thing that's always discussed is the lack of choice. Well this system which gives a woman the choice to be considered a man seems completely antithetical.

You guys have to remember that Krem is Bull's companion, not the Qun's.

And as Bull puts it, he doesnt seems to be someone who cares about that kind of stuff.

I in my opinion, both Iron Bull and Krem would be in trouble if they ever had to go to "proper" Qunari life.

Probably some re-education would be in order for that to work.

Also, females can be Ben-Hassarth. It seems you some of you guys never played a certain DA2 DLC :P

Potentially. You have the choice of letting him and the other chargers hold a hill to keep the Venatori from sinking a qunari dreadnought to secure an alliance with the Ben-Hassrath, in which case they're overwhelmed and they all die, or having them retreat, in which case the dreadnought is sunk and Bull is declared Tal'Vashoth.

Personally I let the chargers die. It wasn't an easy choice; I rather liked and respected Krem, both for his own personality and for what he represented to the gaming industry. But thinking in character, it was the choice between six people or a ship that carried hundreds and a potentially game-changing alliance with the qunari. Sometimes you have to make the tough decisions, and that was a doozy.

This.  I liked what I thought the writers were trying to do with this character and I'm all for inclusion, but I was surprised at the Qunari being portrayed as tolerant in this respect.  I don't feel like it really fits.

Bull actually explains that the qunari recognize transgendered people and treat them as the gender they identify as, not the one they're born as. Krem would do just fine under the qun.

The qunari also believe in the separation between the body and the soul. When a person dies, their body is treated with no special respect, because it's not them anymore. The body isn't what defines what a person is, the soul does.

In that light, it makes sense that the qunari would accept that a person has the soul of a man even if they have the  body of a woman. It put's Sten's questioning as to whether a female warden is actually a woman into a whole different light.
