ESA says 52% of gamers are male and 48% are female. Most people would be shocked to see this statistic at face value. However, most everyone's mom is hooked on candy crush or words with friends. Hence the 31 year old "average" and "48% female". 58% are of the "most played" games are casual/game show/trivia/card games. However, if we look at the "sales" of those games, it paints a clearer picture. Casual + Other only represents 3.5% of sales.
If we want to argue over who's the majority here, let's not kid ourselves.
Math is apparently not your strong suit.
If 48% of gamers are female while Casual + Other only represent 3.5% of sales, that should tell you that females are playing a lot of games that are not Casual + Other.
Also,
this:
In fact, women are the largest gaming demographic for PC role-playing games (54 percent) and they represent almost 40 percent of MMO and digital console gamers. So to say that women are just casual gamers is empirically false.
Even if the 52% was a legit statistic, that means they are barely the majority by 4%, but if you include the thousands of women the world over who hide behind a male allias, than the statistic is much closer to 50/50. Now, intrestingly, if you consider the growth prospects and market compitition for the female demographic there is a much higher level of profitablity to be gained from them, than the mal e demographics, because there is far less competition.
It's no longer the 90s, the age of straight males dominating the gaming-sandpit is over; now you have to share..
Given that the costs of producing these games have increased exponentially, developers have to sell more units if they want to stay in business. The best way to expand your market is to court underserved demographics, particularly where the market is already super-saturated with content for a specific demographic.
In real life, my ideal physical perfection of the human females are female athletes.
These are not societies idea of female physical perfection, as far as I am aware of. Societies like supermodel thin women with skinny body and skinny hands. Ironically, Bioware is doing this to their female characters. All their female characters, across different games have supermodel thin hands. The Elves of both sexes in the past 2 DA games look anorexic and underfed. At the same time Bioware continues to make the males characters tough muscled men. They even cake the make up on women that should not have them. Cassandra for instance, has this black eye shadow on her. I do not know about you but I find the idea of warrior females wearing eye shadow to be laughable.
Me, too. One of the things I love about the CC in Dragon's Dogma is that I can play a female warrior that actually looks and moves like a warrior.
And the make-up looks ridiculous - especially Sera's. I do understand why they do it, though - media standards pretty much demand that women wear heavy make-up.
I do not know where people get the idea that Bioware is company that is trying to be progressive. They are just as bad in promoting stereotypes of unhealthy women with anorexic arms, underfed elves and supermuscle men. I frankly do not see them doing anything positive in this regard.
In a media environment where women are so highly glamorized and sexualized - especially in gaming - it doesn't really take much to get a lot of kudos for being progressive. Here are some of the things that Bioware has done differently from other developers:
- Greater equality in the world as a whole, Chantry led by women
- Armor choices that aren't boobplate and actually appear to offer protection
- LGBT content
Of course, they also continue to insist on sexualizing female characters with the broken pelvis animations, so there is still a big problem there.
As for "oppressive women beauty standards" what about the ruggedly handsome male mcmuscles ? Never see anyone try to change that trope. We still perpetuate it. No one is actively trying to make women deprogram themselves of it. Hypocrisy is really a funny thing is it not ?
What about the women who find themselves the victim of the brainwashing to idealize tough handsome rugged men ? Ah, but they are women, not straight men so that is apparently okay.
The primary difference is that women are still very highly valued and prized for their looks, whereas men tend to be evaluated based on other personal (non-genetic) characteristics. I won't try to speak for others, but I personally was "brainwashed" to appreciate males for things like responsibility, accountability, and the content of their character - not their looks.
I am all for the main male love interest being a butch Tsundere religious woman if and only if the main straight male love interest get the same treatment of unconventionality. Blackwall is a rugged, good looking and very masculine. He has the traits women on average find attractive. Moreover, in't it funny how Cassandra has scars but Blackwall's and Cullen's face are so clean even though from their backstories they have been through plenty of shite ?
Different strokes and all, but I have yet to see a male LI in a DA game that I would consider anything other than average-looking. Not a single one of them has been made-up and airbrushed to look just like every other cover boy Ken (as if such a thing existed).
Of course, I don't really think the female LIs in past DA games have looked like the cookie cutter cover girls, either. Perhaps the display of cleavage / side-boob goes a lot farther in making a character attractive to some members of the audience than I would have ever guessed.
Meanwhile, a lot of people have judged the LIs based only on appearance and in some cases, a few trailer clips. A lot of people judged these characters to be unacceptable as LIs without ever bothering to get to know them in-game.
Shrug.
