You can use whatever criteria you want, but it doesn't make your subjective opinion fact. Fact is that Josephine is a romance option. You might not like her or her romance arc, but that doesn't mean she's not a romance.

True, but then again, what matters to me is the only relevant thing. It grinds my gears to hear the word "disney" in a supposedly mature game.

SERA IS AMAZING! Wish my male mage were a lesbian. :(

/opinion

I was 30 hours into the game when I finally met her.

I was tempted to re-roll a female. :(

Please, please PLEASE Bioware, next time give the Tsundere to the girls and let the guys get the fun one...

People who keep making this complaint seem to forget that 2 is the EXACT same number as the possible romances for straight males the last two Dragon Age games as well.

DA:O had only Leliana and Morrigan.
DA 2 had only Isabella and Merril.
Now DA:I has Cassandra and Josie.

You have two girls, you've always had two girls, no one is taking away anything from you! Are you really complaining that it's not fair that girls and gays get more choices then you? Because you can't have fun if you know that somewhere out there, someone might be having more fun than you?

Yeah but that's when there were only four romance options total (or 5 with Sebastian? )

It was a practical limitation. Now there are tons more options and they're artificially gated for reasons some of feel don't outweigh giving the player freedom. Sexuality is not a big deal in Thedas except suddenly now it is.

I do have to say if I ever do my second playthrough as a rogue mage male with no love for chantry or Maker I will probably skip romances, since neither Cassandra or the ambassador fit that player type. Oh well.

personally I think that romance are a big let down in this game. I love Cassandra, she is my whole game, yet a talk with her 3 time in SkyHold, I get 3 scenes and I was already in romance and I don't get any more content so almost the entire game was nothing. idk maybe was just me because i'm too anxious to speak with her.

Question, I am usin my usual tactic of pursuing all options and going with whichever works out (because I am not going to compromise on important decisions just to keep my girlfriend happy) does that approach backfire? Do I get the usual Bioware warning "you need to tell that other woman we're exclusive."

I honestly wanted to romance scout harding, the enchanter you hired on later on, leliana, and heck. Give me a female qunari somewhere! Or even a dragon lady!! I want exotic... Not just stuck with 2 females (being a straight guy). Toss in a phantom in a abandoned house that has her way with you as a side quest.

Things can happen. I liked sera, but I get turned down that even though for some guys that is their perfect kind of crazy. I havent had a good romance choice since tali on ME2-3

Obviously I wouldn't mind a scout harding romance either, as she seems more interesting than Cass (Cardboard tsundere) or Josephine (Cardboard sweet girl).

But regardless, I don't really play BioWare games for the romances, I'm of the opinion we're better off without them entirely. I'd rather the lore, quests, stories, cultures et cetera become more important. Let the world be the primary character. There seems to be so much focus on the romances, even throughout the promotional material.

Guess what, dudebro? As a representative of bisexual men...

You represent yourself and only yourself, chief.

Next time you feel like making an @ss out of yourself by proclaiming to represent an entire human demographic do yourself and the entire LGBT community a favor: Stop, pull your head out of your @ss and follow your own advice:

"Get OVER yourself."

Mmmkay?

I was going to go off of whichever one's breasts were bigger but as they're both human, they have identical bodies.

Why does Bioware put so many tough choices in their games?

Hey, everyone remember the romance alloted for female in that Baldur's gate game?

Remember that one option?

I don't even think it was in the first game...

Right, remember how that was published 16 years and prior to publishing it, they'd only ever done a mech simulation game? Remember how Superman originally had sandals and couldn't fly? Remember when Batman used guns and wore purple gloves? Remember the first season of Family Matters when Urkle was an occasional guest character? Remember when Nintendo dealt exclusively in playing cards?

Early Installment weirdness doesn't count. This was before Bioware became what it's now known for. The fact is those game made efficient use of limited resources, but this game artificially restricts things and publishes the first unmoddable fantasy game they've ever released.

So what was your point.

Sorry, I do not believe in any way that I made an ass out of myself, and since I know quite a lot of other gay and bi men, I'm pretty confident that, in this case, I speak for them.  Perhaps there are some who disagree with me.  That's fair.  The word "representative" in no way suggests that my opinions are 100% in line with ALL of the group I represent.

More straight male shaming here than what you see on tumblr. I'm cringing at some of these posts.

Normally I'm one to also make fun of Tumblrism nonsense, but this whole subject really shows how entitled so many straight guys are. Gay men and women have the exact same number of options as you, and guess what. Some of us are just as disappointed in Dorian/Bull/both or Sera/Josephine/both as some of you are with Cassandra/Josephine/both. Hell, I'm one of them. It turns out that Bull is a complete non-option for me because of how that romance goes and I'm both pissed and upset about that disappointment. Yet I, or any other gay man or lesbian as far as I've seen, haven't started thread after thread demanding patches and DLC and that DA4 kowtow to my every wish and whim and beckon and call because I feel that I deserve to be the center of the universe. Stuff doesn't go your way sometimes. It sucks, but it's inevitable that some people are going to be left out in the cold. I sympathize with the frustration of not getting what you want, but I've got no tears to spare on the fact that you're upset your straight-boy-ness didn't get you front row seats for the first time in your life.

One's a politician and the other a religious zealot. About as exciting as watching paint dry.

Cassandra isn't a zealot by any means. She actually acknowledges and voices her displeasure with many faults of the Chantry throughout the game. She's actually an idealist who would like to change the Chantry to focus on its tenants of charity, kindness and community. She knows how far it's strayed and she wants to set it back on course.

Definitely give her a play through some time. I think you'll be surprised just how much she doesn't like about the Chantry. Zealots are blind to the faults of their faith and do anything at all to promote it and its agenda. Cassandra isn't like that at all.

Give her a chance. You won't regret it.

Well if OP feels oppressed by the male options, all I wanted ever since DA2 was to romance Cassandra as a woman and I can't, and I also dislike pretty much all of the female options, both straight and gay, so hooray for you? A female player who was as dissapointed as you are? Now we're even and both equally silly in our complaints, lol.

I would like to add one small additional point to the primary point of this thread and where the discussions (for lack of a more civil word) have gone to.

MMO's matter what your orientation is, you have nine options for a romance. The only person limiting your options in the game is you.

The game offers you nine characters. If you choose to limit your character choices based on your rl gender and sexual preference, then it's you, not Bioware, who has stripped you if choices.

It's like going to Baskin Robins and only liking chocolate ice cream. Should that add extra buckets of chocolate for you and take away favors you don't like?

No. The choices are there for everyone because everyone likes something different. Only you limit yourself.

Not everyone enjoys roleplaying certain kinds of characters or genders though, so the idea that players should just play a gender they completely dislike for the sake of a romance is kind of unsympathetic. This is a game that takes quite a few hours to complete, so for me personally the idea of playing as a man and hating every second of dialogue doesn't sound like fun for me, and I wouldn't expect it to be fun for other people.

We like to see ourselves represented in our media in one way or another, that's why representation matters. It's just personally disappointing for me that Bioware has delivered 2 games in a row where I didn't like the romances. I don't expect Bioware to cater to me personally like I'm the only one that matters, I'm not that deluded, I just wish they would have done things different and hope they will do things differently in the future.

Know what's even easier than cutting romances entirely? Ignoring the fanbase's demands and doing whatever you want to do. Hoping to see more of that.
