I'm finding blizzard to be genuinely terrible.

So I finally got blizzard on solas and its very underwhelming. It does almost no damage at all on nightmare and from what I can tell it isn't actually freezing any enemies that stand inside it, just slowing them down, even with the upgrade blizzard skill.

I might respec him and not get blizzard at all. It seems entirely useless.

chill effect is good, slow down both attack and movement. with upgrade, damage is ok with group of enemies. pretty useful. has huge range too.

but, its certainly not using 5 mana per sec...... can anyone explain this??

Blizzard + Ice Armour = zero damage taken.

I agree with OP.

I'm playing on nightmare and I find winter Mage (my build) underwhelming in general. Could be I'm using him wrong. But I have all the abilities unlocked. Blizzard especially is underwhelming. It should be wrecking havoc being that its the last unlock. Instead of chill, I would had exchanged the chill effect for hard knockdowns of multiple enemies.

As it stands, in nightmare, the AI walks through it (chilled and all) as if it's light fluff snow. I hope they give it a slight buff or I may have to revisit this thread after I beat the game several times and recant or admit if it was me playing/doing it wrong or if it is indeed the class itself.

As it stands I have over 100 hours already logged in so I speak from hands on experience and having a ice Mage build. Which on its own merit, I feel a ice Mage is doodoo on a stick.

Love the game though, so not trying to fault Bioware. I hope it's me and not the winter tech tree.

And Blizzard + Ice Armor, you still take damage. If you are playing on normal... play the game on nightmare, its a whole different story. Ice Armour barely helps.

My experience has been similar. I'm using Solas, and specced him to abuse Restorative Veil and Flash Point. Restorative Veil gives you more or less unlimited mana and Flash Point + Clean Burn let's you cast spells a lot more often.

With all my mana issues solved I found talents I found key before, Mana Surge and Winter Stillnes, unnecessary and said goodbye to the Winter tree permanently.

Oh and upgraded Stone Fist is better CC than Winter's Grasp anyway. Screw you Winter tree.

How sad. Winter tree is looking to be bottom tier of the group. Damn! They could had did soo much with that tree.

Why Bioware? Why?

Mana Surge and Winter Stillness are still pretty damn good talents for non rift mages since they do provide you with a lot more mana to cast spells with. But yea, aside from that it does appear to be the worst tree of them all.

So storm or inferno for solas?

Combined with Rift restorative veil? Inferno for Flashpoint and Clean Burn. After that you can pick reach for fire mine or go into storm. Energy Barrage works quite well for unlimited mana/low cool down Solas too.

I find Static Cage with passive to be one of the best AoE damage dealer + controller on Nightmare. Things just die when it drops on top of a group.

It's highly exploitable if your party have a lot of weak but fast AoE damage with multiple attacks (e.g. Bull Rush, Whirlwind, AoE dots, etc.)

Got it for Dorian, truly underwhelming, especially compared to my Static Cage. I'll probably respec him into a fire mage.

Yeah Blizzard is a far cry from the equivalent spell from DA:O.

Of course DA:I mages are in general a far cry from their DA:O counterparts.

Solas AOE Build @ Sky hold arrival:

Inferno Immolate (with wildfire), Flashpoint, clean burn (4 points)

Spirit: Barrier (with Elegant defence) (2 points or 1 point if you can wait an extra 4 seconds..)

Rift: Veil Strike (with punching down) and Stone fist (with shatter stone), restorative veil. Level 11 or level 10 if you skimp on Elegant defence (you can have this build easily ready prior to sky hold).

All attacks are AOE and 2 spells !! So useful to have warrior get rushed and then throw multiple AOE fast.

Peaceful aura>Dispel>rejuvenating  will help as well in threat reduction with 50% and a nice synrgy + 1 more spell Dispel also works against rifts if timed right you can stop an tough enemy from spawning in at all.

Stick with Rift, Inferno and Spirit. For Solas its a easy build.

You are really missing out by not getting Energy Barrage and it's upgrade. With rift mage passives, you can easily cast 3 back to back energy barrages and drop the enemy magic resistance by 72% in less than 4 seconds.

I was able to make blizzard kinda work in the mp on the necromancer, I wouldn't recommend it for the sp though. I think the blizzard probably isn't freezing enemies solid due to a lack of magic and with the level up system, I don't see that changing.

I've been loving blizzard with two mages in the party. I've been really struggling to do this with a single mage but basically it's a Static Cage on my inquisitor followed by blizzard from Solas... followed by chain lightning on my main and dispell from Solas.. it's hilarious!

Winter Stillness is literally a wasted point on a KE. KE/Winter in general seems to be overhyped.

Winter Stillness is good for Necromancers or Rift Mage...Both of those are not going to be moving around, especially the Rift Mage with their Pull of the Abyss...

A support Rift Mage, maybe. If you get good damage with Restorative Veil, though, Winter Stillness again becomes unnecessary.

So I think we can agree that Winter is one of the if not the worst skill tree in the game ?

I like the Cc elements of it, I do not use it for damage, is that the right way to look at the winter tree?

See the Winter tree is primarily a CC tree...Especially with Blizzard being so crappy now..

The problem is we only have 8 spell slots to work with, 7 if you have a focus...and almost all of us will focus on damage to increase our DPS...

You don't take it for up-front damage, you take it for massive CC and incredible damage from shatter combos.

I don't know if I would call it the worst (right now), but the placement of Winter Stillness and the mediocrity of Blizzard hurt it a bit. Honestly, I think if Winter Stillness switched spots with Ice Armor or Ice Mine it would benefit the tree a lot.

Seriously though, Winter Stillness is sh*t. Even on ranged pew-pew and support it's bad because a lot of casting animations will make your character move, defeating the purpose. That it's the gateway to Ice Mine, Ice Wall, and Ice Armor makes this situation even worse.

shatter combo only works if they are frozen, not chilled.

The problem is it takes too long for blizzard to actually freeze enemies. Also what's the point in burning mana on blizzard or wasting the skill point when you can just throw a pitch grenade which is 20x better when you upgrade it to the point where it immobilizes enemies.
