I bought this game about 30 minutes ago, did an installation which went smooth and without problems
but when I boot the game you get the splash screen and it remains black after that, I waited 10 minutes and then rebooted.
I tried several times but nothing helps.

I was on another section of this forum of Bioware where there were simulair problems but the things I read there that solved this.. seriously it is insane.. back whent he game was out people had about 1GB of RAM so a lot of people said BUY MOrE RAM! c'mon I can run Dragon Age and not this? so next solution.. uninstall sound drivers.. not even goign to start with that cause it makes no sense.. others said to uninstall your anti virus.. much use and fun surfing online without any protection just to play a game

So after now at least a year there is still no sane solution? Or is there?
Also I updated the game to version 1.02 thinking that might have a fix but nope..

pc stats:
Windows XP SP3

Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU E6750 @ 2.66GHz

CPU speed: 2.13 GHz Performance Rated at: 3.7275 GHz

Ram: 2gb

GeForce 8500 GT

Realtek High Definition Audio

Could it the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005?
Cause DA installed 2008 and this one 2005

I need some help or I'm getting my money back that's for sure

I doubt its the graphics card although more info about it may help if it is the problem. Such as memory etc

Minimum System Requirements for Mass Effect on the PC:

Operating System: Windows XP or Vista
Processor: 2.4+GHZ Intel or 2.0+GHZ AMD
Memory: 1 Gigabyte Ram (XP), 2 Gigabyte Ram (Vista)
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 6 series(6800GT or better)
ATI 1300XT or better (X1550, X1600 Pro and HD2400 are below minimum system requirements)
Hard Drive Space: 12 Gigabytes
Sound Card: DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card and drivers

...his hardware should be fine. If you have the latest drivers for your card, then I would suggest attempting a reinstall while having as few programs running in the background as possible. Would also make sure you inputed your CD key correctly. And if its a digital download...well...redownloading it may be a req.

Hardcopy, sorry

I chose hardcopy cause I didn't feel comfortable being dependant on Steam for this game, since I read about this error before buying it

my PC shoudln'be the problem, why else would I be able to play games that are a lot newer than ME1. I can run Dragon Age without trouble ont he highest settings as well as Devil may cry 4.

I checked on "Can I run it" or whatever it is called to see if I meet the specs and I am over the minimum and into the recommended zone

I did a clean uninstall, removed any remaining maps and did a manual install cause someone said it solved it for him but the same problem remains

I tried booting it with as little programs as possible, but nothing changes

Completley agree with you on that. Some games i dont mind buyin on Steam, while others ME1 included) i 'have' to have a hardcopy.

It also means I can get my money back without any extra hassle, I've never used steam only seen it on a few occasions. Though when buying this I was hoping they had released a fix patch for this game or at least knew why it was happening

edit:

Also what I don't get is that the Dutch support page of Bioware where you can send topics on etc.
it doesn't have Mass Effect listed >.<

edit:
also tested my drivers etc. with DirectX Diagnostic but no problems are listed with it
