The 15 tweets:

  • 15 tweets to explain what's wrong with Dragon Age's PC controls, camera, and UI. Here we go. @dragonage @ign

  • 1) When you take your finger off the W key, you don't stop moving. You glide/skate for a while after.

  • 2) The strafe keys don't strafe. Your character turns and kinda glides a bit (see #1) and it is motion sick inducing.

  • 3) When you hold down RMB to start controlling the camera, it immediately jerks the camera and your character significantly

  • It seems to treat wherever you hold down the RMB as if you held it in the middle of the screen and then moved it to that spot

  • Instead of every other 3rd person game on the planet that doesn't start moving the camera until AFTER you hold down RMB.

  • 4) No lock on to targets. You have to manually follow them. This is particularly bad because of #1 through #3

  • 5) Terrible lack of visual indicators of your current target. It is a very tiny + symbol in the middle of its body.

  • No circles on the ground. Nothing like normal.

  • 6) You have to hold down LMB or R to keep attacking.

  • 7) Only 8 ability slots. Terrible. Absolutely Terrible.

  • 8) No ability to swap between ranged and melee weapons.

  • 9) If you click on a lootable item from more than a few feet, nothing happens. Your character doesn't walk to it and pick it up.

  • 10) Searching is horrendous. You have to spam V to search. It highlights items for a half second. Brutal.

  • 11) In general, it is like they haven't played any MMO or 3rd person game from the last 10-15 years.

BONUS TWEET: You cannot even keybind to mouse buttons. Seriously. :( I am disappoint.

Thats a negative? That makes the game more realistic to me, you can't stop on a dime in real life either...

This isn't Asteroids in a 1980s arcade.

This is a UI control issue. It creates a feeling of input control lag and adds to the sluggish, sea sick feeling of movement in the game.

There's a reason why every other MMO and 3rd person game out there doesn't work like this. That reason is because it is bad UI/control design. Period.

Consolidated PC issues thread here http://forum.bioware...unity-concerns/

But yeah, they did a really bad job on the port, I don't see a thing they changed in UI or controls from the console version to the PC.

I like the movement inertia the way it is now. Maybe they could tweak it a little, but I don't see the need to remove it completely.

No. It should be removed completely.

Maybe give weirdos an option in the settings:

[ ] Turn on idiotic "drift" for weirdos who think UI/controls is the place to implement "realism"

There ya go. :)

There is a reason that 3rd person games work the way they do. It is called good UI design.

lol.

Don't post poorly thought out "opinions" if your feelings get hurt when someone points it out.

This is bad UI/control design.

In a 3rd person game, taking your finger off W means "stop right now."

Especially since this game actually has some platform-y elements.

While I agree with everything you stated, you really do need an attitude adjustment.

If I was in a position to help make the changes you wanted I wouldn't because your just a rude ****** deserving of nothing from anyone.

Let's keep the condescension to a minimum, please.

Just because you're in a mood doesn't mean you can't respectfully disagree.

You mean because being nice has been so successful at getting responses or patches?

They spent a year adding 2 stupid romances instead of working on PC controls.

They have 1 or 2 lame "we are listening!" posts up, and then they washed their hands of it and ran away.

Being rude doesn't get patches out any faster either. There's a process that has to be gone through, from a development standpoint, then aprovals, then testing to make sure that it doesn't mess anything else up, more aprovals, submissions to the companies that distribute the patches etc.

Voicing your opinion is a good thing, being rude to people who don't share your opinion isn't. I'm fairly certain, with all the posts, and threads dedicated to it, that the people responsible are well aware of the issues. Whether you agree or disagree with the design choices there's no need to take your frustration out on other users.

Also, your 15 tweets list only goes to 11 + a bonus.

No walk/run toggle, no weapon switching (during combat, no switchable weapon/armor sets), survival based solely on 8+ potions for entire party (number can be upgraded), super long loading times, loading menu with tips should stay that way until you click to spawn into level, awful tactical camera, crafting/upgrading is rather confusing and not well explained, war table clickable icons become unresponsive (sometimes freezes up), dialog clickable icons become unresponsive (sometimes numbers appear sometimes they don't).

I really hope they are working on patches BEFORE they work on any dlc.  So much potential brought to it's knees by bad design choices that often make playing the game unenjoyable and a chore. Why were none of these issues brought up in any of the pre-release reviews. Shame on the reviewers!

Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off.  Thats a quote from Colin powell that I used since the early 90's and it applies to everything.   I do not have to be nice, I just need to be responsible.  W means walk, it does not mean glide.  Cambios is correct in everything he stated.

100% agreement.

And I agree that the reviewers ignoring this is really disturbing.

The Escapist gave this 5/5 stars????? How?

Thank you!

And exactly, W is forward, not "forward and then glide a little more"

You know you can enable those ground circles, right?

And I also like the inertia when moving.  I also liked the Dance of Death in NWN, where your character wouldn't stand still while in melee combat.  Because you can't just stand in one spot while fighting someone.

The UI and controls are absolutely the right place to add realism.  Every part of the game is.  There is no reason to differentiate between the different parts of the game.

And there is an auto-attack.  I use it all the time.  I never click to attack.

I haven't had a problem with not stopping on a dime - the animations show a short slide if you stop from a run (unfortunately, *run* is all you have) and that's appropriate.

One big screw-up on the controls is not being able to bind the direction your character *faces* with the direction the camera is *looking.  Not too big a deal while moving as then you'll turn to face the right direction, but its a pain in the arse when standing still or trying some precise movement.  I've fallen off fallen trees trying to get at a shard (thankfully my followers were able to find an AI accessible path and I just jumped to one of them when they got in the right spot) and many, many times I've gone skating off to the left or right side of the screen when using the 'shadow-step' skill the mages have - all because my character doesn't turn to face what *I'm* looking at.

1) You know how I can tell you are a jerk? You say you can enable the ground circles, but don't say how. (EDIT: You may also be dead wrong, because I just went through all the options menus and there is nothing for enabling selection circles. No wonder you didn't explain how.)

2) Inertia while moving is absolutely retarded and makes ZERO sense. When I walk over to something, I am able to control my body enough to stop right next to it. I don't overshoot it, turn around, walk some more, overshoot it less, turn around again, walk back, and finally reach my chair. No, I walk straight over to it and sit down.

People don't overshoot things when they are walking. They walk right where they want to go and stop right where they want to stop. That's basic human locomotion.

3) There is no auto attack. Again, we know you're a jerk because you're making stuff up and being pedantic. You are talking about holding down a button. That's not auto attack.

OTHER PROBLEMS:

There is no way to lock the camera behind your character.

I think this is actually one of the fundamental problems that is making this game so brutally painful for PC players in particular, and some console players.

This is why the camera is swinging all over the place and you're constantly having to adjust it.

In every other 3rd person perspective game out there of any quality, you can lock the camera behind your character and you're golden.

This game doesn't support that for some absolutely insanely crazy reason.

1.  That's kinda funny, I don't care who you are.

2.  "When I *walk* over to . . ." - are playing with a gamepad?  With M/KB you don't *walk* anywhere.  You SPRINT!  As if your LIFE DEPENDED ON IT!  And I think that's the core problem here.  I *hear* (don't have one myself) that you can control movement speed with the gamepad's analog thumbsticks - and so you should be able to 'walk' slowly and avoid the constant 'change-direction slide' that you get when running full-out.  Unfortunately, if you're playing with a M/KB - you're always sprinting and, IRL, its hard to stop on a dime.

In the Tac Cam there is.  I'm playing the whole game in the Tac Cam, because the Tac Cam is superior.

For the ground circles, I remember it being shown to us in one of the preview streams, and I remember seeing the option in the game, but I'm not going to go looking for it for you.

You keep referring to "a third person game".  What defines that group, do you think?

You like realism in games and want physics just like in real life yet you play a game with demons, magic, Qunari, hmmmmm?

In other words, you're full of BS and there are no ground circles. Like I said, I looked in the options: nada.

Put up or shut up.

The game is third person perspective. Tac-cam is an option, but the game is primarily third person perspective.

Exactly.
