Because he's not terribly interesting. He's designed to be inoffensive and some people don't like being told who their best friend is.
He was a solid middle for me after DA2 and he's a solid middle for me after DAI.

With my first character, a Male Qunari Mage, my party consisted of usually Iron Bull, Sera, and Vivienne. Having just started my second character, a Male Elven Mage, I think I'm gonna roll with Dorian (who'll be the love interest), Blackwall/Sera, and Iron Bull again. Needless to say, Iron Bull has quickly made it onto the top of the list for me, I love just about everything about him I guess. He's charismatic, hilarious, and magnetic, but also caring and really sweet, if you do his romance (as I did with my Qunari). He's the first romance that I've enjoyed this much, hence why he is on the top (a literal pun)! After him, my list would go like this so far, though keep in mind I haven't delved to deeply into the characters backstories yet, for some of them:
1.) Iron Bull
2.) Sera
3.) Dorian
4.) Cassandra
5.) Vivienne
6.) Solas
7.) Blackwall
8.) Varric
9.) Cole

There's so much more depth to her character and her views on the chantry, the world and things like passion open up an entirely new side of her. Even the way she interacts with people like Vivienne and Dorian show a willingness to learn or lamentation of not being able to learn things earlier.
Her continual interaction with Varric shows that she regrets how she's treated him and how she actually enjoys his company.

I fell in love with Solas, but Dorian steals it hands-down. I love that you can flirt with him as a female, he flirts back, you can call him on it following his personal quest, and then continue to flirt lecherously for the rest of the game.

Iron Bull and Blackwall are probably becoming my favorites. I love how bad ass they are chopping off heads and giving a bro fist in the middle. Blackwall has a really interesting back story too once you get to know him. I like Varric more in this game than Dragon Age II. Sera i wasn't sure at first but ended up enjoying her especially her banter.
The only one i seriously dislike is Vivienne she's too preachy and throws a fit when she doesn't get her way. This is the same reason i never recruited Wynne in Origins after the first time XD. Solas kinda on the fence he's interesting but a bit of an alpha nerd and know it all. Cole is creepy but sort of growing on me.

Cassandra by far. I knew I wanted to romance her to see what she was like beyond the hard case she portrays herself to be... But wow!

Cassandra is on my list for romance when playing a male character. I actually thought I'd hate her in this game i groaned when i saw she was a companion after her appearance in Dragon Age II but i really like her she's really cool and not an overly difficult whine bag like i expected her to be.

Varric. Can't help it. Followed by Dorian, Cassandra and Blackwall. I also like Cole, in a you're-both-creepy-and-cute kind of way.

My problem is that I want to bring them all with me because they're all great. (IMO, of course)
Thought I'd have issues with Cassandra, but she's pretty cool.
Varric was one of my favorite characters in DA2 (I hated Isabella) so I'm happy to see him return. I'm not sure how he'll stack up here, but we'll see.
Solas has the whole intriguing / mysterious thing going on.
Vivienne is a mage version of one of the 'popular girls' ... Wouldn't want her around in real life, but she may or may not work out with my various Inquisitors. At least she knows what she stands for?
Blackwall seems nice, though I haven't gotten too far with him so I'm not sure how 'deep' he'll be as a character.
Iron Bull is hilarious and I can't wait to do a playthrough where my Inquisitor romances him. Should be fun.
I just got to Skyloft, so I haven't had enough time to really get a strong opinion of Cole. His background, etc. makes it clear that he shows promise, though.
Which of course leaves us with my #1 favorite party member... Dorian! I was intrigued and I looked forward to meeting him prior to the game's release. But I didn't expect to immediately adore the guy, y'know?
But seriously... Dorian is AWESOME. He'll be my Inquisitor's BFF this playthrough, and I'll get to romancing him eventually. Definitely want to have a shot at making sure he gets an HEA (happily ever after).
As for the advisors... It's nice to see Lilianna back and I think it's cool how she has so much more of an edge this time than what she had in DAO. Josephine is extremely likable and as others have said it's nice to see a non-combat character of such importance getting some well deserved time in the spotlight.
And then of course we have Cullen. And of course I'm doing his romance first. (How can I not? I've found him adorable since DAO and really liked him a lot in DA2. It was inevitable.) I think BioWare did a good job at showing that time has passed for him as a character. Cullen has been through a lot and his view on things can be very interesting.

Dorian & Cole. Maybe Iron Bull after.
Finished the game yesterday ... to be honest I don't think any of the companions in DA:I are as in-depth and memorable as Leliana & Morrigan from DA:O for me still ........

All of the companions are interesting in their own way.
My fav thus far as been Solas he's a very interesting and well written character. My first play through I romanced him and I really liked how his story interacted with the overarching storyline. It was very well done how everything tied together.
Second fav is probably Cole I like how he talks and he is amazing during combat. The concept for the character is different I like it.
Third is probably Cassandra. I don't always agree with her viewpoint but she just feels as loyal as they come and is a total BA
I haven't done much with Varric or Iron Bull, next play through going to run with them more.

Mixture of Dorian, Vivienne, Blackwall & Sera.
Dorian has carved permanent spot in party and rotating rest around him, heh.

My like in this order:
Varric
Cassandra
Vivianne
Iron Bull
Dorian
Solas
Blackwall
Cole
Sera
Sera annoyed me from the moment we met. Cole is weird, but slowly growing.
Nothing beats Varric and Cassandra mixed with either Vivianne, Iron Bull, or Dorian.

Sera. Also loving Viv, but she's not in my party, cause I'm romancing Dorian, so I do not have a deep impression of her.
