Is it OK to play without having played the first two?

I own the original games but never got into them very much (though I played more of the original than the sequel, but still only about 6 hours). Not because I thought they were bad games or anything like that, but because I am very prone to the bad habit of trying out a game for a few hours then moving on to a new game I just bought in a Steam sale (which happens a lot as we all know), without finishing the other game first. Hence, I've built up a massive backlog of games that I've half completed or only tried out for a few hours :P

I could play the originals first, but I'm just very excited to play this title because of the more open world and prettier graphics. Looks glorious. The original looks a bit dated now and the sequel got mixed reviews. So I am thinking of playing this one first and then going back to the originals at a later date, when I finally make time to play them.

Is this OK? Does the story require prior knowledge of the DA lore or is it OK to delve right in with the start of this game?

There will be some things you may not fully understand, BUT, it is possible to dive right into DAI without having played the prior 2 games.

Last night I played through a section of the game that I was completely geeking out over, that if I had not played Dragon Age 2, I would not have cared very much at all about.

So far I would say that DA2 has more relevance to this game than DA:O.

I think its ok, if you watch some videos online of the story/lore to understand whats going on.  I would at least play the first one on Easy, and go through it fast, that game is still very awesome.  I would skip DA2(But watch videos of the story), sometimes I wish it didn't exist. :(

Then after you have watched the story videos, the you can make your personal choices in Dragon Age Keep.

The plot itself is really, really simple and easy to catch up. What you'll miss out on is character development and context for some of the characters you'll meet in Dragon Age Inquisition.

My wife is playing it without having played the other two, so I'll let you know if she enjoys it or not if you can wait several weeks. ;)

I very much agree. That said, I've only made it roughly halfway through the game, by my estimate.

OP, you should be fine, as most of the lore will be explained via conversations, but it's all fast-paced. They assume you know a lot of stuff going in. The character arcs are all new, save for Varric, but the lore is kind of glossed over. You may be confused, but for the plot and main story missions, you'll be fine.

Also, you'll miss a lot of references and jokes specifically made for DAII fans. Not necessarily a huge loss, but you'll probably wonder what the hell they're talking about sometimes, or feel like you just missed a punchline.

Like some have mentioned DA2 has more relevance here, particularly I believe its first DLC. But I think everything you don't understand is pretty well explained in the codex. So no I don't think you really need to.

They have made it really easy for players who never played the previous games or haven't played them for years.

OK, I like that suggestion, so if I catch up a bit on the storyline of DAII and DA:O by watching a couple of youtube videos and making some choices in Dragon Age Keep, I should be good to go? Good to know! I do intend on playing those games, but I'm sure you can appreciate it's hard to ignore the latest game in the series when it's such a massive visual improvement over the previous games and has a much bigger, more detailed world to explore. Just can't wait to try it out :)

Last time I played was DA2. . . Four years ago, and I caught on pretty quick.

Sure, and read all the codex entries in the game. You get a lot of the lore that way.

On console this game is amazing I can't really find a negative in it at all. Story, Companions, Game play and graphics are all top notch.

The story is amazing in this one. Only half way through it myself, but I honestly feel it's even better than DAO.

Yea, it might take a bit of time to watch some videos, and read some codex when your in DA:I, but videos will help you decide on choices a bit.  There should be videos that explain the story and characters.  Don't watch walkthrough/playthrough, they will take forever :P

If it were me I would play the first two beforehand since they're still good games. Hearing about previous events in a quick recap or a video isn't really the same to me as experiencing them in the game itself.

If you're doing that, here's the best spoiler-free way I can offer to efficiently use your time. What you need to read up on before playing is this:

Spoiler

That seems like a lot, but seriously, looking it up on a wiki will take no time at all, and you'll feel less lost when characters are talking circles around you.

Only thing I would add is read enough to learn why mages are considered dangerous and what Templars have done to tried to control them.

Has anyone made a "Basics of Thedas" video that only covers vital plot points?

For fun. Just like any other game.

OP, you'll not get some very nice Easter Eggs for those of us who have played through the first two, but I see no reason you can't have a blast in this game on its own merits.

Jump on in there. :)

Sorry. I left that implied in the "why Cassandra is looking for him/her" bit. Mages versus Templars is one of the key themes of the series; I figured it would just come up while looking up everything else.

Because it's an amazing game in it's own right. It doesn't need the past two games to make it good they make it awesome.

Or you can take your sweet time to finish the first two games, while trying out other games like you've done so far. And by the time you're done after a year or so, you can pick up DA:I during a holiday sale for $20.

Already bought and downloaded so it's pretty much impossible to resist diving straight in there! Thanks everyone for the suggestions! :)

Also, I've just had a little play around in the very first area, just to check performance. I'm very impressed. Game runs at Ultra (excluding MSAA) averaging around 40FPS on my lowly GTX 780M equipped laptop, which is very impressive, wasn't expecting that at all. Though I bet later areas are more demanding graphically. Still, it will do very well until my new laptop that I have on preorder with the new GTX 980M arrives next month (which judging by performance I get with 780M, should max the game out at 60FPS easily).

If you do not have time to play both of them, it would be good to read about their story.
