In my inventory all the research items are in valuables. There is also random jewlery and medals. Some have descriptions and some don't. Do the ones that have descriptions relate to quests and the others can be sold without consequence? I don't want to know what quests are on the horizon but if there are items I shouldn't sell in clearing my small inventory.

Think those are called Valuables now.  They can be sold from what I read on a loading screen in the game.  But I wanted to search on google about them just to make sure I dont sell quest related items.

Unless it says research you can sell it. However go to the drop in tables before selling stuff anyway

In the description of those items it does say that they can be used for research. But what about the other items? Some have descriptions saying things like they are from person x. I don't want to sell things only to be unable to complete x's widow's random quest.

On of them tables is in the room to the left of the War Room in Haven.  Valuables doesnt seem to take up inventory space, so you can keep them until you are sure you do not need them.

I just sell all the ones without a tooltip, pretty sure there not used for anything unless they say so.

The research table in haven/skyhold and then also check the requisition table

But requisitions are always updating. I don't want to sell items that cold be used in a later quest. Have valuables been part or requisitions that people know about? No one expects a random requisition :-).

Something I noticed with this. Some of the stuff needed for requisitions is not flagged as 'research item' but is in the valuables tabs (Spider Ichor is an example). So don't just go ahead and sell all those blue valuables until you are sure. You can always buyback, but its a bit of a pain. Would be good if items that count towards quests like requisitions could go in the crafting materials tab instead of valuables.
