OK, so my game crashes every time I want to go somewhere, and people with much better rigs than mine are having this problem. I've seen people talking about "I get no crashes because my PC is super clean and I turned off MSAA" etc. Can we start a canonical list of things you shouldn't run in the background/housekeeping you need to do?

Some solutions from the forums:

turn off Origin overlay

turn off MSAA (how do we do this?)

what else?

Well, we dont know whats running on your system in the background.  I would try to run the game very minimal settings, and work your way up with the settings.  Turn off everything in the background that you know you do not need.  Click on that arrow next the the time in the bottom right, and see whats running.  I only have things I need, like Geforce, Sound software, Keyboard software, Mouse Software, Antivirus(Kaspersky) and Origin.  I also have 1 more, Mirillis Action! that I use to check my FPS, and use it to take screenshots.

It's in the graphics or display options in the game.

I think it has more to do with using the right video driver.

Once you've tried the latest driver and the latest beta, and had crashes with both, that rings a little hollow.

And if you're going to issue a game with stability issues, you should certainly allow folks to save a little sooner. Forcing folks to comeplete a bunch of cut scenes interspersed with dialogue before they can save their character is just poor. I've lost my last two characters to the DX "hung" bug, and I'm ready to spit nails. Redoing a bit of gameplay is one thing. Having repeatedly to redo character creation is infuriating.

You can try "Lowest" settings and see if it crashes anymore. Often it's due to gamer's PC does not meet the recommended settings but they still trying to force Higher settings.

Secondly, open up your PC casing and check if your CPU heatsink or Graphics Card are collecting dust. Those dust are hindering air dissipation and your PC crashes due to overheating.

Thirdly, have your Anti-virus on exception list on your game folder. Often it will cause alot of issues. Fourth, TURN-OFF any third party tool like MSI Afterburner, FRAPS, etc. that are known to crash your PC.

Many PC gamers have not much knowledge about PC at all as i observed.

First step: Disable Origin In-Game for Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Second step: Look in your computer's Startup folder. Remove everything you don't use on a regular basis.

Third step: Run - MSCONFIG - disable startup items that you don't use on a regular basis (as in, hourly). There are many programs that sneak an updater or a 'helper' program into startup items. Adobe does this routinely with every update. Though Adobe AIR should remain, other Adobe startup items can be removed with no consequences. Apple is another big offender with Quicktime. Quicktime does NOT need to be a startup item in order to work.

Don't forget, you can look up what these items are even if you have just an awkward name and no description, thanks to Google and other search engines. I'd recommend doing so if you have any question at all about what something does.

Use a good registry cleaner like CCleaner. Let it make a backup of the registry before using the registry cleaner tool.

For more advanced users, look up guides on keeping non-essential services from running automatically. Start - Run - Services.msc. Note, until you get familiar with what's on your PC and why it is running, you will need to do a lot of internet searches to learn which items are which and which ones are actually essential. Microsoft's guidance in the user interface is not a bad one, and many services which are critical to running the computer are labeled as such in either the description or the mouse-over pop-up tip.

If you're going to adjust your service (per the above suggestion), please don't do so blindly (its a good suggestion, but please knowledge up before doing so).  Black Viper has some good guides for doing if you are unfamiliar with the process.

I had the same problem, but turning down the graphics solved it.

Start with lowering everything one time (High to Medium, etc.) and then when the game lets you maptravel, turn the graphic settings you like the most up (such as Mesh quality to avoid plastic hair) and try maptravelling again. It's really a matter of trial-and-error with how good graphics you're actually allowed to have and still get a great experience.

When you game nothing should be running but processes related to that game. So you want nVidia stuff running, you want Origin running, you might want a gaming mouse or keyboard software to run, and then Windows basic stuff. Not much else really. Everything else should be off.

Also you want to be concerned about drivers installed and conflicting programs. Gaming PCs should be kept as clean as possible to avoid conflicts and generally make them run better and longer.

Edit: Here is how my task manager looks before launching the game.

Is there a trick or step-by-step for getting your system so clean?

In a way ... I forgot to update before booting the game, and got an on-screen message telling me to update, so I did. ;-).

If you didn't build your computer yourself, do a clean system install to eliminate the factory bloatware. When doing the fresh install on a purchased system or on a self built system don't install anything that isn't really necessary. Go through the running services (services.msc), stop any that aren't necessary, and make sure only necessary services are automatically started. Another good thing to do is to purge temp files fairly regularly since they can end up wasting a good amount of space on your OS partition.

The reason I say that is because I'm currently using an older driver on my 780 Ti (344.65), and it seems more stable than the newest 344.75 driver.

I've been playing the game for more than 12 hours and I still haven't experienced any graphic glitches or crashes.

So few people post specs when they are having issues I don't get it that's kinda bog standard.

Always post your specs first than describe the issue,  Relevant things are CPU/GPU/OS/RAM(kinda)/and if prebuilt what company.

Than you can see a trend in what is not working correctly.

Always make sure to have Mesh on High no matter what graphical settings you lower (unless you want plastic hair)

You can still pare down a few more items, namely all five of the nVidia items. Unless you're specifically streaming your games, all of that stuff is bloatware.

I found significant improvement from disabling Windows Search and Superfetch.

This is a great program that is FREE to which you can use in order to shut down processes recommended by Razer for maximum performance while gaming (of course your graphics settings and such you'll need to tweak on your own).

First trick: opening up Task Manager to see what's running on your system.

Second trick: finding out what program each item belongs to, going into that program's settings, and using those settings so the program's not running.

Third trick: using msconfig to disable startup items that are automatically installed but are not necessary to the running of a program.

How do you put your anti-virus on exception list? Where is the game folder located exactly?
