Overall, I love this game. I'm 20 hours in, just about done with Act I, and it's fantastic. The story's great, the world's rich and I love exploring. The game looks beautiful. But the combat still bothers me. It's definitely more on the DA2 side than the DAO side. What I dislike the most is not the lackluster tactical camera or the frantic pacing, but that my party members just won't always do what I tell them to.

A couple of battles highlight these issues. In the first quest with Dorian, I encountered a room with a great choke point and almost all melee enemies. Naturally, I ordered Cassandra to stand at the choke point while my two mages and Varric opened fire from a distance. Things were going smoothly until, while I was looking elsewhere, Varric decided to run up past Cassandra to shoot someone around a corner. That meant running right into a swarm of melee enemies, who quickly swiped off 2/3 of his health before I withdrew him to safety. I double-clicked the "move-to" order to get him to hold position, but he just wouldn't actually hold! First chance he got, he ran right back in and cost me another potion.

The other example, from the same quest line, is from a room where there was an elevated platform accessible only by a ladder. The platform was hidden from the enemies' view, so I thought I could sneak up there and use the ladder as a choke point. I sent Cassandra up and ordered her to hold while I directed my other characters to follow. I had scarcely gotten my mage PC up the ladder when suddenly the enemies spotted us. It turned out that Cassandra had wandered just a couple of steps from where I told her to stay, bringing her into their line of sight. Instead of firing down at enemies struggling through a choke point, I now found myself desperately struggling while my party was split in half. During that same battle, I repeatedly directed Varric to go up the ladder (I was in tactical mode at the time) and he never actually went up there.

As I said, I do love this game, but I just wish the party members would actually follow orders.

Well unless you specifically tell them to hold position (either in tac cam or using the KB shortcut). They'll run off

Companion pathing is currently atrocious. They frequently ignore the hold command as noted, and don't seem to want to stay behind you--even during conversations; I'm kind of done with Casandra interrupting dialogues with pirouettes.

Nop, not true, I teld them to hold, either tac cam or key shortcut, and after very little time, the AI kicks in and they all start running around like headless chickens, playing on hard with friendly fire on and the only way I'm seeying around this is just turn the AI off of everyone, and pause every 5 seconds. I did pause alot in Dragon Age Origins and in DA2, but the tac cam and the AI and the AI scripting and options were WAY better than Inquisition's.

Actually I've found this too. It's annoying when trying to do things that require timing and then they dont do it

The "Hold" command does sort of work. I notice however that they will only hold if they are pretty close to the character I am controlling. If I move too far away from them, they will stop holding.
