I'm really having a mixed roller coaster ride with DAI.

Parts of it I really love, and others parts of it are damned frustrating.  Foremost in my mind is the creeping question that I may be hamstringing myself by attempting to do all my side quests for each map area before moving on.

I have read some simple spoilers, such as for the Red Lyrium Weapons pack, that imply most players are just steamrolling through the main quests and moving through the Hinterlands and related areas by ignoring most of the side events and missions, and running to Skyhold asap.  Hell the Red Lyrium Weapons apparently will NOT come to you unless you reach Skyhold, regardless of what level you are.  In my game, I am already level 9 and I am still running around the Hinterlands and the Storm Coast.  I haven't even touched the Fallow Mire or Oasis yet.

Is this really what's hindering me?  Should I be ignoring side missions and focusing on the 'main plot'?  It's just not a play style I am used to, nor is it as enjoyable for me to bypass and skip things.  Maybe that's OCD, but it's just not as fun for me.

So has anyone else who has progressed farther out, got input on how to be playing the missions?

It's completely up to you. Some enemies in the main or companion quest line will not level with you, meaning you'll kill them quite handily since you'll be overleveled by then.

I'm completing areas in the same manner, one at a time, barely even touching the main quest line. Hell, I completed Hinterlands before even going to any other new area. I 100% an area (except for diagrams, those are fairly frustrating to locate and find) before entering another.

It is hamstringing you, each area different level enemies in various zones. A more fluid approach would be to jump between areas rather than go 100% before moving on. Later quests will actually take place in multiple areas as well. You don't have to do story areas til you've finished everything, but I would recommend rushing skyhold and getting to the specialization quests as fast as possible.
