Hey all, so I just hit level 7 and am on the Hushed Whispers quest line.  I have some questions moving forward.  BTW I am a male human mage.

So...ok mages vs. templars.  Looks like I have to pick one.  I was pretty pro-mage in both DAO and DA2.  DA2 however did kinda ****** me off with every mage turning to blood magic when someone looked at them funny.  This situation is kinda similar in the sense that neither option is good.  The mages are now tied up with Tevinter, and the Templars are basically a self-righteous gang of mass murderers.  I'd rather just tell them both to shove it, my Inquisition would be better without them, but alas.

So, without getting into further spoilers, how did you rationalize who to go with?  Normally as a mage I would just side with mages, but I'm role playing as a mage who believes in mages having freedom, but also knows that Tevinter is bad news and the whole Circle system was kinda doomed to fail.  Plus some of the rogue mages might be too far gone,  The Templars aren't much better.  I am going for a Cassandra romance (not much success there, Cass seems to slightly disapprove everything) but which side gives more options for her?  I'm guessing Templars but not sure.

Also, where have you found good places to find/buy nice light armor or schematics for mages?  So far all of the armor kinda seems "meh" but I have seen some really good ones in screenshots and twitch streams.

Thanks!

I went with the Mages because I felt like Alexius was up to something and wanted to put a stop to it. I haven't done another playthrough, so I'm not sure what the Templar side is like. But without spoilers, all I can say is if you choose the Mages, part of that has to do with the main plot. Like a big part. That's all I can say.

I had to break my "no forum" policy just to come to the board about this same issue, although I had already made my choice. I'm a human  mage but remained neutral about both the Mages and Templars. When the choice came up I was going to pick Templars because it seemed like some wanted to join us if not for Lucius. When I saw that the mages aligned themselves with Tevinter it became more apparent that I wanted nothing to do with them. Until we find out about the

.  I sort of feel like the story practically screams "PICK MAGES" because what pressing matter do you have with the Templars? Nothing. Just some douchebag who says your inquisition sucks and moves on.

There isn't even a sensible solution to picking the Templars. I wanted to pick them and then use the Templar force to aid with the Tevinter forces in Redcliffe. Nope, apparently that would be too late and the Templars don't seem to think a Tevinter force in Feralden is a good enough reason to be there.  So...Instead of smoozing some Templar I decided it was best to deal with the foreign force occupying Feralden,

and aid an arling of Redcliffe.  It seems like a big part of the main plot is tied to choosing the mages, sadly.

light armor, there is a merchant in Redcliffe village(with the mages) who sells a bunch of schematics for armor and weapons (book store), I nearly went broke there. lol!

Its turn out that its a good choice no matter what side you pick. The representation of the free mages and the templars is much more balance in this game then in DA 2. So feel free to pick whatever side you want and fear not. It will work out in the then and you'll have the option of fully supporting the side you pick or punishing them while recruiting them.

So if you want to side with the mages but don't approve of their actions then theres an option for that. Its the same with the templars.

So I finished the mission tonight.  I was really conflicted so I went back and changed my decision just to see how it played out.  Now I am torn about which one to do.

As I said, I am playing as a mage.  My mage is pretty neutral...he understands that Mages are inherently dangerous, and the events of DA2 and the Mage-Templar war have reinforced this fact.  He believes that the mages should have greater autonomy and not be punished just for being born with magic.  That being said, the mages in DA2/DAI give very good reasons for not trusting them.  Yes, Meredith/the Templars instigated the conflict.  Yes, the Templars eventually seceded from the Chantry and became a gang of murdering thugs.  But the mages also became roving bands of apostates turning to blood magic and killing pretty much anyone they crossed paths with.  Even the "organized" rebel mages basically invaded Redcliffe, forced out the arl all while continuing to fight against the Templars/anyone else and on top of all that allied themselves with the Tevinter magisters.

So when the choice came to ally with the mages or conscript them, I chose the latter.  Even as a mage, I felt that it was impossible to trust the rebel mages.  Hearing Leliana and Josie talk about it made me feel terrible, because I was essentially doing exactly what the Chantry did: imprison the mages under my authority because they may or may not be able to be trusted.  However, the alternative is also troubling.  As allies, the mages are free to roam and do whatever they please, which not only sends a poor message given the atrocities the mages had been committing, but poses a security risk and pisses off Cullen and Cass.  Cass is hard enough to romance as it is and that was a huge negative in affection haha.

So I'm not sure what the right move is here...my gut says conscript them, but then I look to be a hypocrite after supporting them for 2 games and my character himself is a mage advocating for greater mage autonomy.  On the other hand, rebel mages having freedom and representing the Inquisition is not very bueno.

Maybe I should go back and recruit the Templars instead?  Although their mission is not nearly as pressing or relevant as the mage one was...

Personally, I would go with the mages. I understand your point of seeing how the mages have given reasons to not trust them as much as we have. But I think about it this way... a mage is a type person. A templar is a rank. I'd rather support people who are trying to exist than a rank of power. And the mage quest sounded more appealing to me, anyway.

Yeah, but what are your thoughts regarding conscripting the mages vs. having them as full allies?  I feel like the rebel mages have done too much wrong for me to trust them at all.  However, I also don't want them rebelling against me and stabbing me in the back.  I'm also a mage, so conscripting them is pretty hypocritical.  "The mage who imprisoned his own".

I'm also trying to romance Cassandra, and she takes a huge drop in approval by allying with the mages.  I'm afraid that this choice will effectively prevent me from romancing her, as I'm not sure if I can make up enough approval to get back into her good graces.

I put them as full allies to give them a chance,

So Ser Barris is not a person just because he's a templar? Really?

I don't care what Cass thinks is the best solution in this matter, since I can talk my way out of the meter. As I think she thinks to highly of the Templars she needs a good kick in the butt to remember we are the inquisition we leave behind our old lives anyway.

Yeah, even I as a pro mage doesn't see his/her point. I just dislike the fact made these factions a little to heavy on the morally grey aspects for decision making. It fact they barely show good Templars, unless you side with them in the game, or do some drop off quest the quest, where the dead

Not that type of thing I don't care about things like approval or disproval as they tend to be bugged or taken away or they put more in after a patch like in da2. Or like Zevran huge disapproval drop in RTO for an example, and stuff like that. Cass is cool but I do think she needs to get out of the rose tinted glasses she wears for the order.
