I think I figured out a good way to get the Carta token (pretty simple really). It involves farming the Carta rogue in Valammar, so if you haven't gotten one by farming Valammar then this might not work (I only did like 10-ish runs when I farmed the slow way).

The video is me actually going back in after I already got it, only took me three tries. The first time I tried this I got it on my fifth try.

 

Here's the steps in text form:

 

1. Go to Valammar, it's better to go solo so your party members don't aggro the enemies.

2. Enter Stealth before the bridge, don't bother with the archers just waltz past them.

3. Go next to the rogue on the left side of the stairs and save your game

4. Kill the rogue. If he doesn't drop the Assassin Blade reload your save

5. Repeat step 4 until it drops.

 

This might not work for everyone, but I hope it helps someone out.

 

 

After searching through The Flats over and over waiting for something to spawn, this finally worked for me. THANK YOU!

 

For others trying this, be persistent. It took me a good 15-20 tries on Nightmare, but it did drop eventually.

I'm having an issue as well. I read the book next to Cole, got all the Deathroot (20), collected the Guild Leader tokens... but when I go back to Heir she still says I'm repeating myself and doesn't let me specialize. I'm ready to slap her. (Is that an option?!)

 

When I open the quest "Way of the Assassin" it says I have everything. To be sure, I went to Val Royeux to the book dealer and bought everything he had in stock but there was no book in there. Went out and collected more Deathroot than I needed. I have no f'ing clue what to do to get this damn quest to complete. I even talked to the other 2 trainers and got their quests even though I know I don't want those specialties. Argh!

I also went to the weapon crafting station in the Undercroft but I don't see any special knife I can make to complete this quest.

crafting the knife happens at the requisition table, it's in the tiny building next to cassandra's hangout

Thank you! It seems an odd place to go for that (when I have a weapon crafting station) which is why I hadn't thought of it. Appreciate the help.

I tried farming for the guild leader token in Valammar on Nightmare 50 times now, to no avail. Has something changed with the latest patch or something, to make a token drop even less likely? About 50% of those attempts resulted in no loot at all!

 

Would going in as a party of one help with the drop as well? I went in with all four party members.

 

Can you tell I'm desparate after 10-15 hours of grinding for that one token?

 

edit: tried again with one man party, on hard and nightmare. Didn't work, like my previous attempts at Crestwood and Western Approach (Wastes). I'm done with this game, the pile is big enough. Thanks Bioware for the awful design of the specialization quests.

Specifically made a handle to reply to this:

 

I went to the dwarfen carta place behind the waterfall in the hinterlands and reloaded 100+ times with no luck, so I went to the western approach, after 40 mins of trying there one finally dropped on the top camp next to shimmer stone mine. It still drops... just proabably about a 2% drop or so.

Had the same issue so i went and farmed the White Claw Footpads out by the Shimmer Stone Mine, took around 30mins but i got my drop. PC version, not hardcore.

I didn't count all of my tries, but after I started counting I got this on the 26th try.

 

Thank you very much I wasted a lot of time trying to get the Crestwood spawns but my last one never did.

Seems like the higher level you have, the harder it is to aquire the weapon from Valammar.

 

My lvl 17 Rogue had to try about 700 times before getting the item on nightmare difficulty (80% of the times there wouldn't even be a drop at all). But it finally worked!

This is an Absurd bug to still be around. And it is still around.

This bug is definitely still around. I had some trouble my first run through but eventually got it, found the KE a breeze during my second, but I can't find the bloody guild tokens for the life of me to unlock assassin. I've tried all the methods advised, even trying over a dozen times on nightmare mode in Valammar, and nothing. I even tried going slowly into the water by the hut by the lake, and gone all over the area near the astrariums, down the hill as far as the shoreline, and back, and nothing. It's frustrating, not to mention boring. It's almost enough to make me put the game aside.

I had no issue grabbing this.

 

1: (WAY OF THE ASSASSIN BOOK) Since i kept Cole I got the WAY OF THE ASSASSIN book right next to cole

2: (DAGGER PARTS) I went to Crestwood and found three distinctly named lurker assassin guys while cruising past Crestwood village. Once I dispatched all three I picked up their parts.

3: (DEATH ROOT) I know I could of went to western approach and get deathroot there I didn't because i had issues with the fade portals there so i wound up going to Hissing Wastes instead and got what I needed there.

 

Then i went to the requisition table and made what I needed for the specialization.

Note: This seems to be not 100% correct because I had issues for a long time trying to get Rift Mage. Since I was playing the mage storyline the Exalted Planes guys did NOt spawn venetori guys but Freeman of the Dales guys instead.

The recipe and crafting are back at camp in the sky hold crafts and resources table. It will show up when you have 3/4 of the items. Craft it. Go back to Heir at skyhold.

I'm worried that something is fouling up my Archer Assassin path. I've collected enough deathroot, found the tome, and slain two guild members to craft my murder knife; but the third is a "no show" and I've repeatedly run back and forth between the most likely spawning locales (and most of Crestwood in the process). Warping out to Skyhold, other areas and back a few times too, but thus far I can NOT complete Way of the Assassin?
