Here's what I did:

-Didn't talk to Dorian after recruitment

-Got Skyhold immediatly

-Did not talk to Varric on the battlements

-Talked to Dorian as the first

The letter was the first cutscene that played and Mother Giselle appeared right after it even when the Hall was in it's first stage (pre-repair)

A common factor in the bug seems to be doing ANY quest in-between Dorian's recruitment and getting Skyhold. What you say at the ceremony seems to not matter as I chose the race-specific

I'd also like to know if you can get this quest if siding with the Templars?

I sided with the mages first go around as a female noble and romanced Cullen. 2nd time through I wanted to play as an elf male and romance Dorian, but because I have already sided with mages wanted to side with the Templars.

Talking to Dorian right after skyhold he said Alexius is dead so I won't be able to judge him. I have left Varric up on the battlements with his friend just in case that's where the bug comes from... But if anyone can tell me if they have successfully triggered this quest while siding with the Templars I would appreciate it!

Okay- I answered my own question. You can get the quest and romance Dorian if you side with the Templars, but you have to get your approval up first since you didn't have the opportunity to do it at Haven.

Through talking to Dorian I unlocked a war table quest about "Qarinus" in the upper left of the Orlesian map. I believe I sent Leliana for the mission. When she gets back I unlocked another war table quest "Dorians request" or something similar. For this one I definitely sent Leliana. When she gets back she gives you the mission "One less Venatori."

Go and kill the three groups of venatori in the Hinterlands and exalted plains. Each one nets you "Dorian greatly approves." After this point you can speak to Dorian at skyhold, and you get the Felix letter cutscene. Immediately following this cut scene, mother Giselle will be in the foyer to give "a magisters birthright quest."

I left Varric in the battlements with his friend. I realize this does not confirm that this is what "bugs" mother Giselle, but both times I received Dorians quest Varric was in the battlements.

I've done things several ways around, the key is that when you talk to Dorian and he gets the Felix letter, you do nothing else and go straight to the main hall to meet Giuselle there.

I had the empty tavern/inn issue.
My Fix:

  1. Put only Dorian in my party.
  2. Save just outside the tavern.
  3. Reload my last save.
  4. Selected Dorian and entered the tavern as him

I did mages for my first playthrough, now I'm doing templars this playthrough and I can't get Mother Giselle to give me the freaking letter. I'm up to the Arbor Wilds. Am I just screwed?

Same issue here. Dorian never brings up Felix death and Giselle never calls out to me from the hall.

I have opened up a couple cases on this with the EA/Bioware Origin customer service, and they said they would look into it. I also spoke to a friend of mine who knows someone at Bioware- that person assured me they would make an internal inquiry but that the dev team that works on patches was gone until January 5th. This would mean it could be another month until we get a resolution, at least.

I would sign in online and not just post on the forum, but contact customer service. The more people that do this the better. I might just look like one crazy person but if many people complain, there is a higher chance of a fix.

And I don't consider having to restart the entire game a fix, I'm not wasting the 50 hours of my current playthrough.

Maybe you guys are progressing too quickly through the story?  Maybe the quest gets locked off at some point?  I'm on my second playthrough and have not had a problem either time.

I've heard about this issue and was mindful this second time around. First time I sided with the templars and had no issue. This time I did the mage mission. I make sure I talk to Dorian all about Tevinter and to Mother Giselle in the garden.  I judged Alexius then talked to Dorian about Felix's death. Then went to the war table for the Dorian's request war table mission, which then unlocks the 'One less Venatori' quest. I then went Venatori hunting with Dorian.

I did all of this both times (except for the judging Alexius part in the templar playthrough for obvious reasons) all *before* talking to Varric's friend on the battlements.

I then found Giselle in the throne room with the letter from Dorian's father.

Thanks for good post.
One question, have you talked with Alexius in Redcliff before doing the "Champion of the Just" ? or, it doesn't matter?

Didn't talk to Alexius, never went to Redcliffe at all. I knew I wanted to side with Templars and just did that. I'm not sure if it matters or how it would affect Dorian's starting approval if you stop by Redcliffe first and side with Templars anyway. Hope this helps!

Hi there, after reading & test i had this bug in my first game.

In my 2nd game i try this tips and i have this quest without talk to anyone (except Dorian); you can talk with him at Riven that dont bug our quest. You can have same before go anywhere (test with mages' alliance) if you talk only with Dorian; 2 times at last for lanch this cutscene.

So.. you can do anything at Riven; after "Riven's Battle" go talk to Dorian first, ignore anyone till you have not quest.

Well .. now i need wait this fix for my first game; i have +110hours' game so far to restart now.. I hope i'll not forced to restart his story or I'll do this romance with other character & give Cassandra to my first inquisitor (she loves him ) n_n

Ps : Sry if my english is bad ^_^

How far are you in your bugged playthrough? 110 hours sounds like you might be pretty far. My concern would be that you have progressed the story too far to romance him even if the quest does get fixed soon.

For people who are saying "you're too far to trigger it," I would like to point out that the Last Resort of Good Men came up on my first playthrough (in which I romanced Iron Bull) RIGHT before the Doom Upon the World quest. You know, the quest that ends the game?

So I can verify that how far you are doesn't matter. That said, naturally, on my playthroughs with trying to romance Dorian, everything has bugged out. Oh the irony.

I'm on my fourth playthrough now and this is the first time that i sided with the Templars. I was a little concerned, that I might not get Dorian's Quest this time, but he has talked to me about Felix just a minute ago.

I almost did the same steps as sch1986.

- I left Skyhold immediately after Haven was destroyed (I didn't talk to anyone I just left and came back)...but I'm not sure if that step is necessary here...
- Talked about everything with him in Skyhold. (and I've talked with everyone else except Varric!!!)
- I started both of his war table missions (a friend in Qarinus and Dorian's Request.) Both got me two dorian approvals.
- Then I went to the Hinterlands and killed the two Venatoris which also got me two "greatly" approvals from him
- After that I went back to skyhold and talked to him and the Felix letter scene started
- Then I walked down into the main hall and there she was...again... - Mother Giselle

I dont know english's name so i take a little translation; I end Shadow's guard & Winter palace + All Side Area's quests i could do.

And like i see i dont have quest yet, i was worried & i'd reason ^_^ Now i wait fix or.. other game.. but i wanted this romance with my Elf mage :/

Good to know. I'm still thinking that unless he wants the romance to feel totally rushed and done in five minutes it would be best for him just to start another playthrough. I know that that kind of sucks but I think doing all the romance scenes in the last few hours of the game would kind of ruin it. That is just my humble opinion though.

According to haldie above it is possible to still trigger the quest. I guess it's just a matter of deciding how you want to experience Dorian's romance (rushed or naturally). With all the side quests cleared out it seems like you likely don't have many hours left to play.

(I know it took me about 120 hours to complete everything I was given with the exception of bottles and mosaics, and I'm a slow player.)

This whole mess is really confusing because so many people seem to think different things will or will not trigger his quest/romance. I was determined to romance him and had to turn down 3 other companion's romances in the process. I am currently into a 95+ hour save, so I was just hoping and praying his romance would eventually pop up but I guess it looks like it's bugged, which is beyond unfortunate. I had no problem triggering romance with Iron Bull, Cassandra, or Josephine. And I think doing all this math and jumping through hoops and reloading saves ect. is ridiculous to start with, something so simple should not be this difficult.

This quest is not triggering for me either. My approval with Dorian is high, and I did his One less Venatori quest. I'll try a few of the tricks listed here once I get home. Regardless, I am not starting over a playthrough 85 hours in.

I have done all the table quests for him, done the Venatori quest, and it still will not trigger. Of course, this is the character I specifically created to romance Dorian, and it is the one that bugs out. XP It's like the game knows...

I did this quest on my 2nd playthrough just an hour ago and yes, it is bug again when I went to it.

It is bugged on the 1st playthrough too but fixed it by going through the tavern as Dorian on a full party thinking it was supposed to be like that. 2nd playthrough previous method didn't work and I finally noticed it's a bug.

I had to make my party consisting of ONLY Inquisitor and Dorian then went to the tavern as Dorian when it got fixed suddenly triggered. Try it out.

I killed three groups of Venatori and I went to speak to Dorian. I didn't get letter from Felix scene though. I missed something or should I talk with him more? Gain more approval? Ughh, this bug is so annoying.
