In the Hinterlands I went into the dragon lung area expecting a fireball in the face but it never came. The dragon flew in circles above me and left me fighting g dragonlings. Second was on the coast while it was fighting the giant. I got up on the cliff above it and very briefly considered going Riordan on it's as but thought better of it.

I was killed repeatedly on lvl 8 and on lvl 12 when I tried the Hinterlands Frostback Fire Dragon playing on Nightmare. Im now lvl 18 and it still lives as I do not try to kill it.

Only Dragon I killed so far is the Lightning one in Crestwood and thats because he cant seem to be able to kill the tank played by AI. (Cassandra)

Im very happy I took The Iron Bull with me, he was down all the time but he has special dialogue after the kill when in tavern. (not sure if it happens when he is not present) also +approval.

I find it to be major pain to stay behind a dragon when my tank turns him around all the time? Any hints how to make Cassandra stand her ground so I can just spank the dragon?

My first interaction with a dragon went something like...

"Holy crap... is that a dragon?!"

-=Party suddenly in flames=-

"Oh, I suppose I should come back later...."

I ran into the one who has the wind storm ability, and held my own for a while.  Got it down to about half before he did a tail whip move and my party members were a bit too close at the time.  Three people gone... and I quickly went invisible to create some distance.  On the bright side, I found a rock quarry a little ways away while I was running like a bat outta hell.

Small victory.

Cas Tanked it like a boss, while i hacked at its legs with my 2hd sword, varric took fireballs to the face and solas didn't move out of fire... but it did die after a lot of potions and cursing at solas and varric

I accidently ran into the dragon in the hinterlands. Was just trying to finish up some old quests that I didn't need a strong party for, so I took Solas, Sera, and Cole for the dialogue. A party of 3 rogues and an underpowered mage against a bloody dragon... Not smart.

"Sera, why do you keep running into that wall?! Solas get out of the fire! What are you people bloody doing??" Cole and I were the only useful ones. He went after the dragonlings and I hacked at the dragon, but we still died.

My first encounter went horribly. Got up to level 12, same as the one in the first main region, and went for it with Cassandra, The Iron Bull, and Cole... and a fire staff.

We were all at half health by the time we got past the dragonlings and dead before we got the dragon a quarter of the way down. Will try again shortly with Blackwall instead of Bull, Solas instead of Cole (I've got some winter spells on him) and a couple of ice staffs.

I finally defeated my first dragon (Hinterlands). The whole time I couldn't help but think, "This is how Skyrim should have been."

Everyone died almost immediately save Cass who got under the SOB and hacked the heck out of the legs until it died. Just spamming Challenge an War Cry she was indestructible. ...as an aside that leg was well neigh indestructible.

"This is how Skyrim should have been"

I am not sure about that one because fighting a dragon in Skyrim was pretty damn epic!  Sure, once you leveled up and got used to the tactics, they became another instance when you could charge in and wait for the pattern to set in.  But, the first couple battles with a dragon in Skyrim were great experiences.

This is not downplaying what BioWare has offered here at all, because I have yet to beat one of their dragon and their overall tactics appear to be more random, so these are great battle as well.  So each of them have done the whole "dragonslayer" theme in different, but very satisfying, ways.

I tried the Crestwood dragon first, and when I ran out of potions and he was still at like 80% I figured I should come back later.

10 hours in the game and I am... bored? Feels like skyrim and the endless whackfest. Respawning enemies make me yawn with the repetition. Kill them, turn around, and bam. Once again.

What enemies are the problem

If mages and templars, you need to clear their bases.

Constant mages and templars were my problem near the start

They still keep coming, along with the bandits. And since there is no discussion option its like mutes on picnic.

And I keep hopping around with that dam space jump.

And slamming that dam mouse cuz there is no auto attack for pc.

Jeez. I never thought to say this but Dragon Age Inquisition is boooooooooooooring.

It was oustanding!

I had Vivienne, Solas, and the impervious Cassandra (a character I expected to dislike).

Had Cassandra tank the dragon and use shield wall for the dragon's flame breath, Solas worked on calming the dragon down with his winter chill and Viv tried to electrocute the poor beast. We had a couple of deaths but I was able to get them back up and strategize accordingly. My warrior mostly nipped at the dragons heels but did adequate damage.

The Dragon was at first strong and intimidating but it's shrieks grew more and more desperate as it called out to its kin. But alas after a grueling potion chugging fight, she fell.

One spot in particular that stuck out to me was using Solas' Ice Wall to block the dragon's flame breath. Tough old goat he is, he had a sliver of health but still came through for me.

Hinterlands,

myself (sword/shield), Iron Bull, Viv, Solas.

Those three burnt through potions pretty quick, Bull kept going via manually forcing him to use regen potions, but eventually all three died with 0 pots, though I had my own five regen pots just in case. Dragon had 1/4th health left, so I tanked and spanked it.

Never lost any health, had full 100% guard, just constantly blocked his attacks and stabbed him with a toothpick pretty much. That was on normal and on-level with the dragon as well. If the AI was any good and I used tac-cam I'd have probably ended it quicker I reckon.

Edit: got the everliving CRAP kicked out of me the first three times I went for the Frostback, even though I was lvl 12.  My backline kept getting windswept in and rekt :D  Next time I am going in with full fire resist gear purpose built for fire dragons :D
