I've finally gotten around to actually playing the game. I'm on the very first boss, the Pride Demon, on Nightmare. I've died probably 15 times so far, for one reason: my party does not do what I tell them to.
Obviously I want to get Varic and Solas away from the boss, and I want Cassandra to taunt him and face him away from everyone.
Sounds simple. In Origins and DA2 it would be. In this game, however, I turn around for one second to activate the Rift and when I look back, I see that Varic and Solas thought that they needed to be standing on top of Cassandra for this fight. Oops, I forgot to tell them to hold! My mistake. Reload, same commands, Hold Position.
Same thing happens. I position them, they just run back into melee range. Over and over. Of course they just get one-shot by the lightning whip attack.
Okay, so I'll really get Cassandra away from everyone and facing the boss away. I'll put her in a damned corner. Reload, Taunt the boss, turn and run towards the corner...and the boss isn't follower her. He's attacking an NPC archer. Taunts don't taunt? Great.
I almost had it at one point. It was close, I was running low on potions. But the party was actually in a decent formation. I just needed to survive one more phase. But then Solas decided to use Barrier while the boss was stunned, effectively wasting it. I guess I need to turn that off in his AI. Reload, turn it off, fight the boss...and Solas is still using Barrier whenever he feels like it.
Is this how the game is designed? If so, I fail to see how tactical combat on the level of Origins or DA2 is possible at all. I really hope I'm just missing some setting.
I have my party's AI enabled because I don't necessarily need to micromanage regular DPS rotations, just utility. Everyone is set to use 0 potions, so I can manage them myself. I have every party member defending themselves.
