I use one mage with the spirit tree full as my must have companion. I always set Barrier as the prefered spell and he is using very well. But when Barrier is with cooldown he always decides to cast dispel. I dont want to disable dispel, it can be useful. 

 

So, my questions:

 

- Does dispel do something other than, well, dispelling? Its good to have the mage using it frequentely?

It gives spell damage boost when upgraded and if you use dispel correctly, you can insta-banish demons back into the Fade Rifts they came from.
