I am level 9 and I have none of them so far.

Am I missing out? Or is it simply something that is handy to have, but is by no means required?

If I am missing out...what is the best way to get my hands on them? I am not familiar with that part of the game.

I'm level 14 and have none... Do people even use grenades?

I'm also playing on hard. Once you masterwork your gear you'll become OP if you choose wisely. For example guard on hit with the staff and healing on armor...

I'm level 5 and already found a fire grenade schematic and can make them and add them to my potion belt. Check merchants who sell schematics for them, do side quests. Not exactly sure how you're playing the game and it could just be bad luck with the RNG.

Wut...

Grenades are fantastic in Inquisition. Basically an equivalent to a spell that doesnt require mana. You should have been able to find Antivan Fire in one of the early quests or sold by a merchant.

Well I have gotten this far without them and have had no issues whatsoever.

Honestly at this point I feel like they would mess up the rhythm I have going.

The jars of bees I got from a quest. Saved my bacon one at least one occasion. I see them as something you pull out in an emergency.

I only have the Jar of Bees.

The prospect of a bee grenade made me giddy.

Because it's just so damn EVIL.

I like how one of the upgrades includes wasps.

It's fantastic, especially once you get the "..And some Wasps" upgrade.

It does seriously brutal damage and can change the course of an entire battle.

Same. And it's my favorite thing ever.

I'm a squishy Mage, so when/if my party gets wiped put, you get a jar of bees to the face, lots of fireballs, and fade spazzing.

I found my antivan fire grenade recipe around level 5 (in the hinterlands?) and its been indispensable. Just found a pitch grenade recipe at around level 9. My two-weapon rogue uses them as an alternative to ranged attacks.

Win recipe:

1) Have mage cast ice mine, freezing enemies in place

2) Toss fire grenade

3) Watch enemy freeze and burn to death

4) Victory

I am level 9 and I have not left Hinterlands. I have found two schematics already. I can not spoil them, but a hint is.... look in chests in a dungeon. This building has to do with a certain race that mines alot of lyrim for those that are willing to pay fit.
