...that Cullen was in love with you (Female mage origin) when he chose him as executioner for your harrowing? It seems to be common gossip among your fellow apprentices so could easily have gotten back to him. If so was it a test or to harden him or just Greagoir being mean.

I think he knew, but I'm not 100% sure about it.

I agree it was quite harsh to choose him indeed, poor Cullen :(

I'm going to go with that he knew. The Circle is a very, very, very small world.

He probably knew, but thought it was just gossip. I think he was testing Cullen to see if he could put his duty above his emotions.

Most likely he knew. I agree with PunkNouveau13, it probably was a test. Just as the Harrowing is a test for the mage, so should it be for the templars.

I do wonder what would have happened if the female mage had failed the Harrowing. Would Cullen have been able to execute her or would another templar have to do it? If he had executed her, how would he have changed afterwards? I can sort of imagine him becoming a bitter mage-hater who doesn't dare trust anyone else lest they also become an abomination. Well after the Harrowing when you're able to talk to him, he says that he would have felt horrible about it, if it would have come to that.

Uh, Cullen volunteered. Greagoir didn't make him. And if you talk to him a bit longer, he implies it was because he was sure he could be more merciful than another Templar.

Interesting, I have tried a few variations on that conversation and never hit that response. From his reaction in the broken circle quest he could easily have gone down the bitter mage-hating route that Truby-Liz suggests.

Yeah I'm thinking, in the end if you didn't side with him in the broken circle quest, he just snaps inside. If you find him after he says that he wishes he had died fighting with the other Templars. But, it's kinda understandable since he was getting tortured by the blood mages.

Survivor's guilt. But he didn't snap for my elf mage. He was just depressed and probably angry. I got nothing at the end for him.

Considering he does become a bitter mage-hater, I'd say most certainly.

I found the whole Cullen bit disappointing when I was on my female mage. Obviously, for him to be in love with you, there has to have been some sort of history there but yet, the dialogue is rather vague both when you are doing the starter quests and later when you return to cleanse the tower. I'm not saying there should be some long, drawn-out romance-type series, but the little dialogue hints seem a bit inadequate considering his strong feelings for the female mage.

Yeah, I also wanted more dialogue or back story regarding the Cullen/Mage romance, even after the quest. It just seemed sorta empty.

I think the history in other contexts would include following your character to work and watching through her windows with a pair of binoculars.

I think the word love is not an accurate description. Obsession or infatuation is probably closer. He despises and wants the player at once. He is... not a healthy guy if you read what the developers say about him.

Of course Greagoir knew. That would indeed be a very strange coincidence.

My thoughts exactly. They did a great job in sketching his character by revealing practically nothing.  I always have the feeling there's more to him than meets the eye, and I don't mean that in a good sort of way. He's probably got this secret box locked away under his bed where he keeps the 'trophies' he's gotten off you during the course of the years: hairpins, discarded magic utensils, a shoelace, an odd glove stolen from your dresser...
My feeling is he'd be pretty close to mentally cracking if it wasn't for his Templar training.

I think he more despises the fact that he wants the player. Cullen just has a big case of the blue balls.

I'm not sure what the dialogue options I chose were (only managed to get it once) but it was kind of funny and sad at the same time when my character hit on him in the Origin.

Cullen's love / infatuation / lust / whatever you want to call it for the PC is like Frollo's love for Esmeralda. It's bound to be unhealthy, because of the circumstances they are in.

They didn´t really have a love affair. More like a hopeless crush, but even if you flirt with Cullen he doesn´t use the chance but run off scared........

Disgusted by his own desire/lust more likely.

If Cullen is as deeply creepy as some of you suggest then I guess being co-opted by the grey wardens was even more of a lucky escape.

Cullen isn't creepy. I don't find him creepy, anyway. But it is definitely a sad interaction. Anyone else think of Alistair when playing a female mage with Cullen? Cullen has a similar awkward, gentlemanly demeanor. He can be quite sweet, for instance when he says "you can come talk to me any time you want." He tells you that unlike other templars, he doesn't like the idea of killing mages, which is what Alistair says made him sure he didn't want to be a templar (i.e. seeing a girl killed during a Harrowing). However, unlike Alistair, Cullen is trapped in his vows, and after living through the takeover of the Tower by blood mages, I think his innocent attraction for the female mage PC gets twisted up in his mind. That experience likely colors his memory of the infatuation and makes him think that it was twisted all along, when I don't get the impression that it was anything but innocent attraction.
