After you meet with Varric's friend, where can you find him again?  I swear I've traveled over every square inch of Skyhold and can't find him (and, alone among the companions, he's not included on the map).  Do I need to wait until other parts of the hold are unlocked to continue the quest about the book for Cassandra?

It actually involves hopping around and doing some climbing in order to reach him.  Go to where Cassandra is, and start going up the stairs.  You should see a wall that is completely destroyed.  You have to climb up the rubble in order to reach the top. Once you do, you should see Varric standing on the landing below you.  Hope this helps. 

 

Edit:  you could also just go out, do a mission and come back.  I'm pretty sure that wall is one of the first things that is fixed in Skyhold.  I kind of get the feeling we weren't supposed to go talk to Varric first, simply because it is so weird actually getting to him before the wall is put up.

Thanks.  I did a sidequest and he was available when I got back.
