Significance of the displayed DPS number?

Is it derived somehow from the "base damage" of the weapon and the weapon's attack speed? I just got to Skyhold and got my red lyrium weapons and although the staff has much less base damage than the one I'm using now (lower +electricity damage, for example), it has almost 20 points more displayed DPS. Does it attack more quickly than my staff? I didn't even know there were different staff base speeds. Or does it take into consideration the other bonuses? Like +20 damage against living creatures? I'm at a loss here.

I think when a weapon has a corruption (+20 vs living) rune or something like it, it calculates the dps vs. the ideal target.  So during the Dorian mission (awesome mission by the way) I got a dagger with a corruption rune.  Even though its damage was only 57 or so, it was listed as 203 dps.  Kinda annoying really.

I figured that was it. Well for generalized questing it's probably better for the corruption rune, maybe I'll swap back out while closing rifts. Thanks for the reply!
