I've been aware of the fact that companions can leave if their approval level goes down enough. Is there a way to gage their levels? How much does it take for them to leave? Not sure if this has been asked and answered already but I am still curious. Any help is appreciated.

I had this question too -- was just searching around in the character menu to find approval info and couldn't find it. IS there a way to see companion approval? (And what about for non-companion characters?) I'd like to have that information.

There seems to be no way to see the Approval level but you can take a guess from their behaviour towards you.

If you get a warm and friendlly greeting they like you, a cold distant one is more to the opposite

According to new info posted on twitter, their approval levels are reflected in the cards when you go to the party gathering screen.  They change based upon either your companions liking you, or disliking you.

Do you know how long I spent trying to find the approval rating meter for the characters in this game? A very long time! Good grief.

Is that true, I thought it was plot related? Cassandra is very nice to my character and calls them her friend, but it doesn't look like her card has changed. Cole and Vivienne's changed despite us not being friends. Varric's changed twice.

They change if they don't like you too.  IT was confirmed by a dev on twitter, actually he's the one that told the info to start with

I'd say Vivienne despised my character, though her card didn't change, while it seemed he got along with Dorian his card changed to an "evil" looking one, but that was after his personal quest.
The one I'd say he's got the most ratings from is Solas, his card hasn't changed, even with the personal quests. So far it's Dorian and Viv, her's changed after getting to do her personal quest with the wyvern and such.
I thought personal quests had to do with approval, I suppose I must have gotten a lot of positive approval after the whole royal ball thing for that to happen.

Uhm...  what are they supposed to change to, exactly?  Because I only just noticed that Varric's has changed for me.  Problem is it went from a picture of his chest hair to a picture of him kneeling on the ground, surrounded by a bunch of red spirits.  I imagine this is supposed to be a "Varric does not approve" - however I've been getting almost exclusively "Varric approves" or "Varric greatly approves" from him throughout the game.  And he seems very warm towards me whenever we talk... so I'm guessing either this is a bug or I'm misinterpreting what the card is supposed to mean?  0o

I was in the same situation as you, but then I completed some more of Varric's personal quest and his card changed to a friendlier looking one.

I just got that too, it might be preparation for his personal quest.  It seems they change two times, one based upon approval/disapproval, and then also in preparation of their personal quest.

 

My Cole changed from dark/red, to Cole wearing a white outfit, that's now two characters who really like me wearing white outfits so maybe that's referencing their approval

I've also noticed that there seems to be an approval cap beyond which no more approval is gained.

None of my cards seem to have changed. Though I can definitely tell who doesn't really like me. So far it's mostly Vivienne and Sera. Sera hates the mentioning of being an elf and anything to do with the elven past and Vivienne hates it when I mention mages being free. But both cards haven't changed at all since recreuitment.

 

Edit: Dorian's card has changed now that I took him to see his father in Redcliffe. He's dressed in white robes and there's coiling black snakes around what looks like a horse's head. The snake's head faces Dorian with jaws open. That mean anything bad? Cause the conversational choices I made he seemed to like.

I was just amused because when I was going through the Hissing Wastes it seemed I was getting an approval pop up every single battle.

All my cards changed after doing their personal quests, but I don't know if they specifically reflect approval. I think its just an indication of what changed about them after their personal quest.

 

Otherwise, it's hard to know if the cards represent them liking or disliking you without being able to see what both versions of the cards look like...

Here's what I've observed:

 

Dorian gets the snake card after doing the quest with his father in Redcliffe.

Dorian gets a card where he's handing you a white flower when you romance him.  (It's really, really awesome; my favorite of all the cards)

 

Sera gets a card using her bow to make a lewd gesture between her legs when you do a Red Jenny quest involving fighting some noblemen in a small area.

 

Varric gets the terrifying blood-drenched card after the Fade event.

Varric gets a happier, partying in a bar card after either doing his personal quest in Valammar or getting the "Everyone plays cards" cutscene, not sure which.

 

Cole gets the white robes card after you do the quest with his amulet.  

 

I don't believe Solas's card has changed, but I've done his "turn on Fade globes" quest and he has a card with billowing robes and his arms outstretched.

 

I haven't checked to see if Vivienne's card changed after doing the Snow White quest.  Same with Iron Bull and the dreadnought quest in Storm's Reach.

 

I haven't finished any quests for Cassandra or Blackwall so their cards are still the same.

 

I have noticed that the cards for your advisors change on the war table as well, but I think that's a function of the type of mission, story, character, or incidental.

Well I can agree that they only Change when you do their quests o.O

Varric liked me all the time but after I did his Red Lyrium Quest it changed to him kneeling on the floor (which seems kinda negative).

Then after completing the quest with Bianca for him now it changed to Varric chilling at a table and looking content.

 

I really think the cards are tied to the quests o.O; 

The same goes for all other characters as far as I played. Vivienne changed after the Snow White Quest, Cole after the Amulet Quest.... and so on....
