Anyone else want Bioware to go back making linear games? Playing DA:I is exhausting. [Edit]: Now 25 hours in & its starting to show its quality

Man this game is a real struggle to slog through, I find myself constantly losing the motivation & enthusiasm I try to work up to finish it.

I feel opening with the Hinterlands was a bit of a mistake, its just like playing an mmo & a boring one at that. Not the best first impression.

I've just finished act one after 15 hours, 8 of which were spent in the bloody Hinterlands.

While the trade mark Bioware Storytelling & Character interactions are kinda still there (If a little on the boring side) they are spaced out between F***ING MILES of MMO style quests & terrain. And THAT'S my biggest problem with the game.

Personally I would like it if Bioware went back to making games like DA:O in terms of size. Helps with the pacing & the good story/companion bits are never too far away. Although if DA:I sells well there isn't a snow balls chance in hell of that happening.

Anyone else feel the same?

P.S. **** you Skyrim

[Edit]

So after another 10 hours of play I finally feel like I'm playing a Dragon Age game.

The quest "here in lies the abyss", all three parts of it have been the best parts of the game I have played so far by quite some distance.

Crest wood feels like the right balance of open world exploration & structured questing. The area changing both in tone (A Stormy night to a sunny day) & how the player explored it (Draining the lake, exploring the Dwarven taig)  was pretty cool.

Also I found the Totally Linear nature of the siege on the wardens greatly enhanced the both the game play & story telling. Bringing some much needed focus & Drama to the narrative. Very engaging stuff.

Plus it had the most compelling narrative hook of the game so far. To investigate the Wardens with Mike Hawke  :police: It was pretty compelling story telling from Bioware & their best in quite some time IMO.

So I'm off to do more grinding for a bit then we crash the assassination attempt & Val royeaux. Hope the main quests beats keep up this quality of gameplay & story telling.

It's probably not a coincidence that the most linear quest of the game [so far] was also the most enjoyable.

BTW I still feel like having to play the game for just over a hole day before it starts getting compelling highly questionable at best.

I know I could have sped through it, but I want to play the most of it so I can have a proper Experience of it & to have an informed opinion on the whole single player package.

But my experience & opinion are entirely subjective but what can you do. So if you think my preferences suck & or that I'm full of **** just talking out of my ass, let me know!

In my second playthrough, I finished the main quests for Hinterlands under 2 hours.

JUST MOVE ON IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE PLACE.

Get what you need and go on with your quest.

This game does not punish you for leaving.

You can skip all those side-quests you know...Just do the ones necessary to push the plot forward. I myself love the fact that I'm 60 hours in and I have pretty much just doing the sidequests in Skyhold. Gives me bang for my buck.

Nope. I believe BioWare said something like all they're games will follow this route. And I'm glad. I'd take ME4 if it was literally a copy/paste of this game. I like it.

Nope, no reason to gut exploration out of the game just because some people need to be held by the hand and railroaded around places.  If you weren't enjoying HInterlands, and decided not to go ya know, advance the plot, that is your fault.  I am happy they went BACK to making games that are more open, it's the same as the BG series, nothing was forcing you to explore every inch of Athkatla doing side quests, but you could spend a good 20 hours doing nothing but that, if ya know, you as the player made the decision to do that.

No, they don't necessarily need to go this far into open word territory again but this is much better than the restrictive nature of DA2 and even Origins was full of dull corridors that seemed to go on forever. I would say they can still do better in balancing freedom to explore and story but I think this is progress.

Sometimes I feel so bad for Bioware.  People complain that their games are too linear and they need to go back to Baldur's Gate 1, so they do.  Then, people complain that their games are too open and they need to go back to being linear.  This also happens with every single change they make ever in any regards whatsoever.

I think if I worked at Bioware, I'd eventually have a nervous breakdown and go on a postal rampage.

Btw, I kind of agree with you, OP.  I did like the smaller spaces, I think.  But whatever.  They're trying, and they can't please everyone.

More seriously though: What I realized palying throguh the Hinterlands is that: This is the first game for a long time that gave me a sense of wonder while exploring the world. I see a ruin at the horizon, I wat to go there! Enjoy the view, kill some bandits, find some treasure, solve a little puzzle. I like that. I like the scope of this world. I am not much past the hinterlands, so I will not pass final judgement now.

But really, exploration is a huge part of a fantasy-rpg for me. I hardly got this with recent bioware-games. This is a first. And I hope to see more. (And I hope Bethesda is also looking at it and finally realizes an open world and a stoy + NPCs with personality are possible!)

This...is...BSN!

On that note.

No this game fits what I like. DA with an open world. Nothing forcing you to do filler quests. One thing I enjoyed about Skyrim, besides modding the crap out of it. Was I could do anything I liked. Spent 88 hours barely scratching the surface while never touching main story line on one character.

Like being a newborn all wide eyed in big world. What's that, oh what's that. Oh lets go there. Whats is that over there. Go smack a mammoth. Go smack a.....nuts a dragon...ok run.

No, I hope they keep this format

Like people have mentioned, you can just move the plot along without any punishment.

If you choose to do things that you don't enjoy for hours on end, well...that's your fault.

I love it and spent 32 hours or so between the Hinterlands, Storm Coast and that Boggy Mire which name eludes me before I even moved act 1 to completion.

....

****, now all I remember is everyone singing the dawn will come and all the epic feels that came with it.

Excuse me as I go ahead and waste more hours on this.

Game is super.

30 hours in and good times.

I will be very pleased if this sets the standard for the future, as I suspect it will.

The game was advertised as having a much more open-world environment. If you like linear games with little effort involved, why did you buy it? That's like being vegetarian, and buying a hamburger, but being upset at the fact there is meat in the sandwich. It makes no sense. Don't like it, either don't play it or just do the main quest, then it'll be as linear as you can make it. No one said you had to explore the world, so if you don't want to, don't. It's as simple as that.

I personally hope they keep this as the standard for their future games, it's way better than previous Dragon Age installments.

No. I am really impressed with the way the game is just as it is. You can go critical path and ignore sidequesting if you like or you can get out there and build up your Inquisition and explore Thedas as I have been wanting to do since DA:O. Amazing game. OP, I sincerely hope you are in a very small minority of players and I don't mean that as a  slight I just hope this new style pays off for Bioware.

The Hinterlands is diffintiley effecting this games over all player score.  Many people start the game and arrive at the Hinterlands still unsure of the games tone, and it leaves people under the impression this is all DA is.  I was diffinitley turned off the first 8 hours of this game about to give up because I was so bored to death questing around Hinterlands, it was really Skyhold that brought me back into the game.  The game is so enourmous I don't think you have given the game justice if you've beaten it under 30 hours thats rushed imo.  People saying if you don't like the side quests don't do them, well you need power to move along the main plot and if you really want good gear it requires some exploration.  So ya its a tough argument I think in order to make all this side work interesting would hurt the main story so I perfer the way it is.

I think the main problem with the open world isn't necessarily the size and scope, which is always a good thing IMO if handled well, but the presence of the power mechanic. If you just want to play the game for the main story and seeing what happens to the characters, you're gonna be forced to go to a section of open world and spend 2 hours running around grinding rift portals before moving on to the next quest. It really throws off the pacing of the game if you ask me, not the presence of the side quests. It almost seems like they put it in to offset the length of the main story, as without it you could easily complete the game in 10 hours; I'd chalk it upto them just putting too much focus on side quests honestly. I would still prefer having the main quest be short upfront as opposed to making it feel longer through forced grind.

I am loving the open world of Inquistion.

What I do want to see more of going forward are more urban enviornments. I want to see cities. We do not see val royeaux in its full glory in the game, I want to see that. I love the wilderness areas, but I also want to see some more urbane enviornments and cities with the same style and scope.

It does feel pretty dull and exhausting. More of a chore, really
If I was not DA lore fan I would probably not even do half of them
