Fan reaction towards DA2: This game is too linear and the enviroments are too limited. I wish there was more exploration and less restrictions.

Fan reaction towards DAI: This game is too open ended and there is too much exploration. I wish the game was more linear.

Conclusion: The fandom will never be happy. We have officially become an unpleasable fandom.

Ever hear of people having different Opinions?

I wasn't aware that we, the fandom are so-posed to function as some sort of hive mind that always agree on everything.

Anyway foe me DA:I's open world approach has 2, totally subjective problems/annoyances.

1. These Huge areas have a lack of compelling narrative content in them.

2. Travelling around the open world feels rather slow. This is personal preference but I really enjoy it when exploration in huge sandbox's occurs at a faster pace & have alot of different, engaging methods of getting around. Be it plat forming, flying or vehicles.

Granted in the DA universe you can't reasonably expect anything extravagant. Just Horse back or on foot. Which is fine, just on the stale side.

Anywho, more power too those of you who enjoy DA's new exploration heavy approach.

Personally, I find it too slow, stale & repetitive. But I Hope the next 2 acts change my mind somewhat.

Enjoying the story, characters and dialogues doesn't mean you can't enjoy the nice views too, ya know?

Also, N7Recruit doing what he does best: desperately ranting. Good laugh.

Good to know I am upholding my stellar Reputation. I don't know how not liking the new Exploration Heavy approach of DA:I makes me "Desperate" though...

I'm a VERY pleasable person, here is what I guess 99% of the people would not complain. Well now that DAi is out and lots of people love it I'm sure a lot of people would hate my idea but I seriously believe that if we had never seen DAI this would be the formula of perfection:
1 - DA:I Graphics
2 - DA:I Story
3 - Complete and unchanged DA:O gameplay, even stat system and controls
4 - DA:I Crafting
5 - DA:I Character Creation
6 - DA:I Maps and exploration but without respawn and with level scaling except for dragons and bosses
7 - Complete Inquisition mechanics remake, yes for wartable, no for random quest for power, yes for deep story quests about going into lands and getting power much like it was with the treaties in origins

In a nutshell I'd say Origins with DAI graphics, size (size is important) and main storyline

If you actually click on the link I put, you'll see why we are an unpleasable fandom. But for the sake of tl;dr basically the three DA games have been so different that they attracted different groups for different reasons. In other words, there will never be a consensus with DA games, because everyone likes it for different reasons. So yes, I have heard of different opinions.

It took me almost 80 to finish the game yet I must admit, sometimes I felt bored.Open world is fine, they just should make side-quests better.

68 hours in on my frist playthrough and it's the Skyrim experience I wanted.  The world reacts to the changes you make and the few times I had to bounce back to Hinterlands different mobs spawn to reflect the antagonist changes.  I feel no desire to rush the main quest line and only do so when I've exhausted the side content.

I'm absolutely loving it.

I'll take the hinterlands over the deep roads + brecellian forest + kirkwall design from either DAO or DA2 any day. At least the current level design allows you to move about as much as possible in this enviroment and finally lets you take advantage of terrain and such. Those games were big long oddly shaped corridors in comparison, and I really don't want dragon age to ever go back to that.

What I do want is the way of delivering quest from DAO implemented in DAI. More cutscenes and chances to interact with NPC's, over the short convos with 0 cutscenes we get in this game. We have a good CC that lets us manipulate our facial appearance more, so let us see our facial expressions more often with getting side quest bioware, please.

It's as non-linear as you decide to make it. So if you want it to be more linear, do less sidequests and focus on the plot.

Yes and no.

I'm about 50 hours in and I'm still finishing up the Hinterlands.  It's gotten to the point where I've turned the game down from Hard to Normal/Casual because fighting all those enemies with constant pause-combat was taking up way too much time.  On that note I kind of agree.

At the same time, I love that I still have so much to do.  I don't want to be finished.  Heck I'm actually kind of sad that I'm wrapping up the Hinterlands.

As a side note, I've discovered that normal difficulty is not a cakewalk at all if you don't play with the tac cam much.  It's been interesting, fun even, to play my fights with just my character.  As I've gotten more abilities the AI on my characters has been a bit smarter. So if I get tired of tac cam I can turn down the difficulty a bit and the fights don't become too easy, but flow better.

OP, this is what happens when Bioware listens to the forums failing to appease everyone. Plus, EA

no I love this current direction the open world areas are huge and look awesome now DA can finally compete with Skyrim and in

my opinion it succeds the areas aren'T so dull the storyline is awesome and especially the characters are diverse and unique (not like Skyrim where they were one dimensional shits)

if ME4 is anything like this I'm going to love it

I really loved the gsme first and foremost.

I do think it will be really annoying to travel long distances in maps that are hard to read and are black until I discover them to farm for power so I can spend it to farm for more power to progress with the story will be a hassle though and because of it I may not ever finish my second playthrough.

Uhh you cant really compare the openness of Baldur's Gate to this game... Picture this, EVERY single house in BG1 and BG2, you can go into.  There are virtually zero limitations in where you can and can't go, and what you can and can't do.  Dragon Age, (the entire series), is MUCH more limiting than Baldur's Gate, including Inquisition - and everything about the Dragon Age series is dumbed down in some respect in comparison.  To say otherwise really just proves you've never played BG1 or BG2.

But those were CRPG's, and this is a console game first and foremost, so in that light, they shouldn't even be compared in the first place.

There's a reason Kotaku did a PSA about this *snip*

Also

This is exactly how I feel. After a few missions in the Hinterlands I realized spending to much time there leveling up was going to kill any desire I had to play further. So I did what any rational person would do and got the hell out of there. If you're going for 100% completion I would suggest spreading that part out over the course of the game.

I felt a little bewildered and exhausted in the Hinterlands at the start, but I honestly think that's less to do with area design, quests, and exploration potential (all of which I think are great in DA:I), and more to do with the writing at the very start of the game (which is rather threadbare).  At the very, very start (as in, the first hour of the game), I don't feel like there's enough to anchor the protagonist, to give the player a sense of what they're connected to and what motivates them.  I wish that the game had shown a bit more of the player's role re. the Conclave, shown them alongside some NPCs from their pre-Inquisition life, and simply given them a little time to be themselves before being thrust into the role of the fade-marked Herald.  I think that a very small amount of game-time spent in this way could help to ground the player so that they have a better sense of who they are and where they want to go, and thus aren't left wandering around, searching for a purpose (though, of course, they're free to wander if that's what they want to do).  I really miss that about Origins.

In my humble opinion, games like Dragon Age & Mass Effect don't fit in the "linear games" category.

I'm glad BioWare made Dragon Age: Inquisition this way.

The issue here is not the open world or exploration, it's the way the side quests are designed. They are, as the op said, mmo type filler content... or "fetch quests". And yes the game does force you to partake in at least some of these or you will be underleveled. If that's not enough there's a magical requirement at the war room to unlock the next story mission.

It is a single player mmo and some people have an issue with that.

Mass Effect is cool but not my style, I like melee, when possible monk, if Samara could train you in the arts of badass sexy paladin monk with high heels then I would probably play the game. But I'm really not into guns and the other stuff.

Open world fit these games (DA and ME) yes. It is cool. But hey... open world not necessarily means randomness and shallow quests. They could if they wanted make meaningful maps instead of pretty moving pictures filled with little errands for you tu run

I like how quests actually relate to the main story. Well, some of them. But I hope the next "Mass Effect" will be more linear, and that the next Dragon Age will be like this one but with a longer main story.

In RPGand especially Bioware games the story is always more important than everything else. It's just that "everything else" should be of decent quality and not DA2's
Also, being forced to do these side quests to gain power and to level up makes the whole experience exhausting. Fearing that you miss a cameo or an important mission doesn't make it any easier
The picture is pretty. But I did not buy this game to stare at water or trees

Why is everyone acting like you have to explore everything? If you want linear, stick to the main quest paths. If you want to explore, explore... god man, it seems people can just never be happy. I'm LOVING this game so far. I find it incredible aside from the odd bug here and there. But I also understand a game this grand, on this many different systems, will indeed have bugs.

I've played the Baldur's Gate series in its entirety more times than I can count, and I really can't wrap my head around this.
