Some companions I think have less banter together, like Cassandra and Cole for example. Cole asked her a question in my explorations and she replied with, "no". While Solas and Cole talk a LOT together on the other hand.

Dorian and Sera talk a fair amount together too.

I think it depends on the party composition the most. Cassandra just has to put up with Cole cause he's my favourite rogue XD.

I get a decent amount of banter, mainly between varric and blackwall, Dorian and Varric, and Cole and blackwall.

They are my main companions so I haven't really had a chance to hear from anyone else. Cole is really interesting to listen to when he says things about the other companions or things happening around you.

I found that they banter more if I'm standing around for a while as opposed to constantly moving around.

Solas is pretty quiet.

Other people hardly ever shut up.

Solas quiet? Or you having a laugh.

How far you in the main quest line?  My companions were pretty quiet until I progressed, and now that I have Skyhold, Iron Bull, Varric, and Dorian (my main companions) rarely shut up.  They'll even keep bantering while fighting (which is a whole other level of amusing when you think about it.  "Ho hum, another battle.  So, Varric...")

Weird, I hav music playing while exploring the Hinterlands every two minutes or so. Sure it's not constant but it's hardly quiet neither. It's true that there's not nearly as much banter between party members as in II, but so far it seems to be similar to Origins in that regard. Seems to be plenty of it at least, and being able to join in is a nice bonus.

Also a lot more game to cover though.

I've heard at least 20 instances of party banter in my 14 hours of play so far, mostly in the Hinterlands.  And I've stuck exclusively with Cassandra, Varric and Solas in all that time.

I've just picked up Dorian. I'm really hoping they will start talking to eachother soon. :(

The banter definitely picks up as you progress the main quest and unlock more areas. They have more to talk about then! I don't think there are specific trigger areas, but I've been getting banter regularly just by exploring. (There's a hilarious one between Solas and Blackwall I just got...)

I see. It's just odd that I've only triggered one party banter in the many hours spent in the Hinterlands whilst a lot of people have said that their companions never shut up in the same area. It can't just be down to bad luck.

I am still in the Hinterlands and Solas, Varric and Cassandra are talking alot with each other on my game. I noticed the banter starts when  you walk alot without fighting any monsters. I was farming herbs and ores alot, so I was avoiding combat that is when they started chatting.

Some combinations don't talk much.  Cass/Varric/Solas doesn't have much banter.  Cass/Dorian/Solas has quite a bit of banter.  At least post "Act I".  Dorian and Solas don't really ever shut up.  What I have noticed is that while the banter isn't constant it is unique.  I don't hear the same lines over and over and over again.  It's always something new.  And it changes with events going on, clearly.

About 70 hours in.

It's a Hinterlands issue, in the other areas my companions won't shut up.

Using Cass, Viv, and Sera gets me a lot of party banter.

Mainly about Sera showing her butt to Viv and Viv commenting on how bony it is....

There has been far more party banter in this game than the previous two.

Well. After recruiting Dorian, I've actually been getting some banter now! I had Dorian, Bull and Sera in my group during some exploration in the Hinterlands. I think I had about three banters trigger in the space of 20 minutes?

I've just now acquired Skyhold, so we'll see things pan out after I've partied for a bit.

I'm uh, still getting roughly one banter conversation per, like... four hours played. I have everyone, I have Skyhold, and I know from reading around that this is not normal.

Been switching around my active party too. Ugh. I try everything. This really sucks because I don't replay games more than annually at best so if it persists I'm just kinda screwed on this front.

Sad PS4 player here!

That's not good! And it doesn't help that everyone's games seem to be so inconsistent. Either you get them all the time, or very rarely, or it only picks up after a certain point. It's still a worry. It's gotta be a bug though. There's no way that someone it just that unlucky with triggering them.

My party members seem to banter with each other just fine.

Playing on PC. In 70+ hours I heard banter maybe about dozen of times. Honestly, I walked half of Wester Approach (I never use a horse, because I'm afraid to miss those oh so rare banters) without a single conversation. I changed party members, tried relog, travel to Skyhold and back. And nothing , silence( I know Cole and Blackwall do have convos, seen videos of it. But they never talk in my party, for example.

Well, all I can say to everyone whose banters trigger without a hitch is to count yourselves lucky. If narrative is the main reason you play these games (like me) then be grateful you're actually getting it! :P

Myself, I'm honestly considering dropping the game for a few days in hopes of a patch for those of us experiencing this difficulty. But I have no way of knowing if that will come to pass so I tweeted Mike Laidlaw hoping to find out. Maybe my file is just bonked...

In the meantime I leave my PS4 on for long periods of time waiting to see if my luck changes, roaming a world in which the only particularly talkative explorers of my Inquisition... are the scouts.

My party rarely talks as well, but I have witnessed some hilarious banter between Solas, Vivienne and Cole.Don't forget to bring popcorn. Solas and Viv don't quite get along well... :D

Back to the banter though - I wish they were talking more, it's one of the best parts of BioWare games.

It helps to change your party up I've noticed. I get most of my banter just as I'm entering a region from the world map.

Once I'm traveling and exploring there isn't a lot of banter. I thought I was the only one.

Still haven't had the option to chime in yet either, like I've heard others mention. :(

Far away from the Hinterlands. It's worked that way for me at least.
