I just had to decide on whether or not to support Leliana, in her decision to kill some traitor named Butler? Who is this guy and am I supposed to know who he is?

Just a random with no backstory. That's why I always choose the remain silent option.

You dont. It is Leliana character bit. You are supposed to see how she changed from cheerfull optimistic post-criminal to cold blooded spymaster.

Butler is part of the storyline where you chose to harden or soften Leliana, If you kill Butler you will have no chance to stop her at another junction (At the church where she kills the preist)   in the game and thus she becomes hard and out of control. If you stop her from killing Butler you can stop her from killing the priestess.

I think you do actually get a report from Farrier, the guy who Butler killed. And since they are all code names, it's possible we could know who Butler is, but it's just as likely he's some random guy Leliana knows who ended up switching sides and is now a problem.

It's one of the dialogue choices where you influence Leliana. Ruthless Leliana or compassionate Leliana.

If you remain silent or encourage her to kill him, she becomes ruthless at the end of the game.

Yet, when it comes to mage rights she is so delusional about some of those aspects that it would be funny to put her and her future alter ego in one room.

You apparently also need to tell her she was right to pull her spies back after Haven is destroyed, on top of getting her to spare Butler. Not sure if that's actually the case, as I've just been googling this myself, which is how I found this thread.

Considering how the mage stuff actually winds up being positive if you side with the mages, it appears she is in the right and it is you that is delusional

Yeah, the main function is as part of the approach to soften Leliana.

If you choose to kill him/stay silent, Leliana will become a manipulative divine. If you spare him she will become an idealist. It's one of the choices that determine what kind of divine she will be. If she will be divine.
